Gov. Rauf Aregbesola of Osun has said that
Nigeria must not just exist as a nation but lead
the black race in the cause of advancing African
renaissance.
The governor said this in Ibadan on Monday at
the opening ceremony of a three-day conference
held in honour of Prof. Toyin Falola, who clocked
65.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that
the conference, themed “African Knowledge and
Alternative Futures’’, attracted prominent
Nigerians, traditional rulers, academia and
students from Nigeria and diaspora.
Falola is a professor of history whose several
works have been published in international
journals across the world.
“Nigeria stands as a cardinal element in rallying
other Africans together in advancing the cause of
African renaissance,” he said.
Aregbesola in his paper, entitled “Development,
Good Governance and Productivity’’, said that the
people and government must sustain a support
cycle to achieve growth and development.
“The nation is poor and remained poor. This is
because the people do not realise that civilisation
requires people to support government from their
productivity, while government provide
infrastructure.
“The challenge of government is not getting able-
bodied to engage in productive ventures and earn
their living.
“If 50 million able-bodied out of the Nigerian
could be engaged productively, the nation would
have up to N1.5 trillion circulating in the
economy. I bet it Nigeria will become super power
in 20 years,” he said.
The governor said Ibadan does not reflect hosting
a university with the status and calibre of
University of Ibadan if not in anything but
effective waste management system.
Aregbesola condemned the spate of killings in the
country, calling on security agencies to stem the
trend.
“Progress and development can only be achieved
in a society where there is peace,’’ he said.
Gov. Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State said that his
administration believed in knowledge-driven
government and governance as upheld by Falola.
Ajimobi, who was represented by Alhaji Olalekan
Alli, the Secretary to the State Government, said
that the present administration would continue to
place priority on knowledge-driven governance.
The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, urged
Africans to lead a revolution aimed at
strengthening knowledge acquisition, its
dissemination and utilisation.
The monarch, who took the audience through pre
and post-colonial history, said the Old Oyo
Empire reigned for 600 years and longer than any
other empire in Africa.
He stated that the present situation in Nigeria
called for reflections and concerted efforts
towards overcoming the challenges.
On his part, the Orangun of Oke-Ila, Oba
Adedokun Abolarin, said the essence of education
was to serve others in achieving intellectual
development.
He stressed the importance of traditional
institutions, adding the institution must develop
the Yoruba race.
“The trajectory of Falola’s life showed that people
have lot to do in achieving greatness,” he said.
Aregbesola, Ajimobi, Adeyemi and Abolarin in their
separate speeches described Falola as a prolific
and profound author cum Africanist.
NAN reports that the event was chaired by Mr
Jide Owoeye, Proprietor, Lead City University,
while Prof. CBN Ogbogbo and Prof. Gloria
Emeagwali delivered the keynote addresses.
Other dons present were Prof. Emilolorun Aiyelari,
UI DVC (Admin); Prof. Emeritus Femi Osofisan,
Prof. Tam David-West, Amb. Olu Saanu, Prof.
Femi Mimiko, and Dr Tunji Olaopa. (NAN)
As early as 20 seconds, Eagles striker Okpotu burst through on goal, but he slipped at the vital moment with only the goalkeeper to beat. It was guilt-edged miss by the forward.
In the ninth minute, it was the turn of Emeka Atuloma to score but the former Heartland midfielder missed from a corner-kick.
There was a terrible blow for Nigeria on 13 minutes when Kalu Orji was forced from the field following an ankle injury. Timothy Danladi took his place.
On the half hour, Eagles keeper Ikechukwu Ezenwa produced a great save to keep out Calesso Manu’s powerful shot from an acute angle.
The jittery Danladi made a school boy error and almost caused his team to go behind but Ezenwa stood firm to rescue his side. Ezenwa came up twice to trump Calesso Manu.
A timely clearance by Braulio Nary in the last action of the first half ensured that the scoreline was 0-0 at the break.
He cleared off the line to deny Okpotu after the goalkeeper failed to gather a cross with the wind causing all sorts of havoc.
Okpotu spurned a simple chance with the Angolan shot-stopper stranded in the 50th minute and his miss haunted Nigeria afterwards.
Atuloma tried his luck from range, but the ball was always rising in this wind as the Eagles pressed for the equaliser.
Ezenwa then came to Nigeria’s rescue once more. This time to deny Va his second from point-blank range.
Substitute Okechukwu watched on in agony as his attempt struck the woodwork, onto the Angolan goalkeeper’s head and away from danger in the 77th minute.
The busy Okechukwu then hit his attempt over the crossbar with only the goalkeeper to beat with six minutes left to play at regulation time.
Okpotu leveled matters on stoppage time after missing a catalogue of chances throughout.
At extra time, Rabiu Ali fired over the crossbar following a quick break from the Eagles.
Okechukwu turned hero as he made amends with a left-footed shot into the back of the net from the edge of the area.

The former Chelsea ace turned down calls by the Liberian counterpart to join in salvaging Ivorian politics from the hands of oppressive leadership.
Drogba insisted he would not follow the footsteps of the Liberia’s president-elect, George Weah, who won elections late last year.
“He has been a big brother also for a long time and what he has done today shows that in the labor force, with perseverance, we can achieve our objectives and to realize our dreams for the good of the community.
“It’s not necessarily the case that all footballers will [now] want to become president. George [Weah] has opened the way for him to make an impact in his own way, and others can make an impact on their communities in other ways,” he said as reported in an online post.
Weah, ex-Liberia international and three-time African Player of the Year, Ballon d’Or and Fifa Player of the Year award winner was overwhelmingly voted Liberia president last month after winning a re-run election.
The former Liberian skipper won the first round of the October 2017 vote but failed to secure an outright win which led to a re-run.
The run-off between him and outgoing vice president Joseph Boakai eventually delivered the seat for the former AC Milan, Paris Saint Germain, Chelsea, and Manchester City striker.
Weah will be sworn in as 25th Liberia president on Sunday.
Succinct to not that Drogba has been part of community development in his country with the latest being a massive investment in education sector as the footballer built a gigantic school in Ivory Coast.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and cabinet ministers of hypocrisy in the handling of the Fulani herdsmen attacks killed 73 people in Benue State.
In a statement issued on Thursday by its National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Kola Ologbondiyan, the party flayed the collective silence of the governors and some serving ministers following President Muhammadu Buhari’s failure to visit the affected communities.
The party said it is a tragic failure of character and an act of hypocrisy that the same APC governors who, in 2013, unleashed insults on the PDP and its Federal Government for delay in visiting Borno State at the heat of insurgency attacks, have lost their voices now that President Buhari had refused to visit Benue, Taraba or Kaduna to condole the people.
The PDP noted that neither the APC governors nor any federal delegation had visited Benue, Taraba or Kaduna since the unabating killings and traumatizing mass burial of the victims.
“Today, Nigerians are heartbroken to realise that those they thought were patriots and messiahs never had any iota of goodwill towards them.
“The questions are; why have the APC governors and ministers suddenly lost their voices now that President Buhari has refused to visit Benue or shown any form of empathy to the plight of Nigerians? Have Benue and Taraba now become ‘no go areas’ for President Buhari? Indeed, this indifference calls for deeper reflection by Nigerians.
“We challenge the APC governors to have a change of attitude towards Nigerians and at least show that they also are human, especially at this trying time, which the inept APC government has plunged the nation into.”

Swaziland football has been rocked by the death of Mbabane Swallows chairman Victor Gamedze, who was shot at a petrol station on Sunday, the club confirmed.
The death of the popular soccer boss and successful businessman has stunned the nation, and all football activities in the country have been suspended indefinitely.
"It is true that our chairman has been shot to death. We are still shocked. We are busy sorting out things with the family," Mbabane Swallows chief executive Sandile Zwane told Independent Media.
"We will release a proper statement that has all the details on Tuesday. We want to get the direction from the family."
Gamedze had overseen arguably the most successful period in Swallows' history, with the club advancing to the group stages of the CAF Confederation Cup for the first time in 2017.
They have also sold a number of players into the African market, and are the reigning Swaziland champions.
He also publicly declared his interest in purchasing South African side Platinum Stars last year, though no serious moves were made.
Gamedze was a former Swaziland international and also vice-president of the National Football Association of Swaziland.
FIFA has intensified the investigation into doping in Russian football, disclosing on Monday it has finally sought details from the chemist who exposed the scale of state-sponsored cheating across sports.
The Associated Press reported last month that Grigory Rodchenkov, the former Moscow and Sochi lab director, was still awaiting contact from FIFA to pursue intelligence on how soccer was tainted by the doping conspiracy.
Evidence and cooperation from Rodchenkov led to 34 suspicious football cases being identified in a World Anti-Doping Agency investigation by Richard McLaren, including players from Russia's World Cup squad in 2014.
FIFA also has access to additional evidence from a database from Rodchenkov's laboratory that could help to prosecute cases.
"After conducting an initial review of the new data from the Moscow laboratory provided recently by WADA, FIFA has now submitted a list of specific questions to the WADA designated lawyer for him to forward them to Dr. Rodchenkov,'' the governing body said in a statement to the AP.
McLaren has already provided "information concerning football given to him by Dr. Rodchenkov," FIFA added.
Rodchenkov's New York-based lawyer, Jim Walden, said the Laboratory Information Management System data for the Russia lab has "thousands and thousands and thousands of files in a secret portion of the server that show the disappearing positives which also benefited Russian soccer players."
Although Rodchenkov oversaw the destruction of about 8,000 doping controls in 2014 when the scheme was exposed, WADA managed to retrieve 3,000 samples, including 154 from soccer players. Those samples are yet to be subject to forensic analysis to detect manipulation of the samples, including scratch marks which could prove that bottles were forced open and tainted urine swapped out.
"FIFA has requested that a forensic analysis be conducted on a concrete number of samples (selected following the criteria set by WADA) and asked to be given priority," FIFA said. "WADA informed FIFA that the order of priority will be made by the designated expert team. We haven't heard from the expert team yet."
FIFA denied reports that it is looking to appoint an investigator to look into Russian doping but said its anti-doping unit is being supported by external experts.

Mr Umwzuruike said the cause of the death of one of the Doctors has not been
confirmed to be Lassa Fever as he had Mobidity of Diabetes.
The Commissioner further said the victims presented late because they were self
medicating when the symptoms started showing.
“One was self medicating, he went to Mater Hospital in Afikpo. Two doctors he
saw later advised him to go back to FETHA he refused until it was advanced before
he came to the hospital’.
For the second Doctor, Mr Umezuruike said because he has Mobidity of Diabetes
his death has not yet been confirmed to be caused by Lassa Fever.
Mr Umezuruike debunked reports that the victims were taken to Irrua Specialist
Hospital in Edo state for treatment instead of the Virology Centre built by the state
government in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State.
“He was treated at FETHA. We built and donated the Virology Centre to FETHA.
The second case treated a woman who was bleeding after undergoing local
ovuloctomy and he was treated by the doctor to arrest the bleeding on 29th
December. They didn’t present to the hospital on time”, he added

Kidnapped member of the Taraba State House of Assembly, Hosea Ibi, representing
Takum I constituency has been reportedly killed by his abductors.
The police command in Taraba confirmed his death to newsmen on Monday.
Ibi was kidnapped on December 30 last year, in Takum when he went home for
Christmas celebration.
Eye-witnesses said he was whisked away at gun point by his abductors riding a
motor cycle.
Police spokesman David Misal said the body of the murdered lawmaker was found
in the afternoon at Kwari, along Takum – Kashimbilla road.
He said: “Yes, it has been confirmed, the body was found this afternoon at Kwari,
along Takum -Kashimbilla road.”
Taraba State Governor, Darius Ishaku, said he has been devasted by the death.
“My heart has been broken,” he said.

have been thrown into mourning this afternoon.
“It’s a very sad news to the people of Takum and the entire state,” he said.
The Vice-Chancellor, University of Ilorin ( UNILORIN ), Prof. Sulyman Abdulkareem,
says in spite of the challenges posed by the ongoing nationwide non-academic
staff strike and fuel crisis, the university will not join the strike.
Abdulkareem made this assertion on Monday in Ilorin at a three-day unscheduled
visit to the various faculties of the university to monitor the ongoing registration of
fresh students.
Speaking at the Faculty of Physical Sciences, the vice-chancellor said his
administration was determined to work for a near seamless take-off of academic
activities.
He said the ongoing strike of the non-academic staff was a challenge to
everybody.
The vice-chancellor said he had made several visits to Abuja to sort-out delays in
the payment of earned allowances of both the academic and non- academic staff.

He noted that today his efforts were yielding fruits, adding that the goal of the
University was to ensure academic stability, so that students graduate at the right
time.
Abdukareem commended all the staff of the University for keeping the academic
calendar running in spite of fuel crisis pains and ongoing nationwide non-academic
strike.
He said the university administration recognised the authorities of the labour unions
both locally and nationally, and would desire obedient workers who recognise and
reference authorities no matter how inconvenient.
He however, noted that peace would soon be restored in the education sector.
“But while negotiations are ongoing, let’s go the extra mile to keep our calendar
running,” he pleaded.
In his remarks, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research, Technology and Innovation),
Prof. Gabriel Olatunji, who was also, among the team that visited the faculties,
suggested that faculties should adapt to the current challenges.
Olatunji further suggested that the Faculty of Agriculture should split the
registration centres to five in order to reduce the long queues observed at the
faculty.
He also advised that it was possible to screen fresh students using youth corps
members and PhD students and thus stick to the academic registration deadlines
despite non-availability of some workers.
The Dean of Agriculture, Prof Kola Joseph, listed delays in uploading registration
courses by level advisers; delays in clearing students from Central Admission Office
and poor internet connectivity as the challenges facing the faculty.
Others are shortage of manpower and paucity of funds among others. He urged the
university management to send more officers to assist the faculty in the registering
of the students.
