Former Blues midfielder Lampard enjoyed a good first season in charge at Stamford Bridge, taking the club to the FA Cup final and securing qualification for the Champions League. But after being given more than £200m to spend on new players in the summer, Chelsea find themselves ninth in the Premier League after 19 games, 11 points behind leaders Manchester United and five points off Liverpool in fourth.

Roman Abramovich said,

“This was a very difficult decision for the Club, not least because I have an excellent personal relationship with Frank and I have the utmost respect for him’.

“He is a man of great integrity and has the highest of work ethics. However, under current circumstances we believe it is best to change managers.

“On behalf of everyone at the Club, the Board and personally, I would like to thank Frank for his work as Head Coach and wish him every success in the future. He is an important icon of this great club and his status here remains undiminished. He will always be warmly welcomed back at Stamford Bridge.”

Jose Mourinho admits it is going to take something extra special to crack the 86-game unbeaten home record set by his Chelsea team.

Liverpool's long run without a Premier League defeat at Anfield came to an end after 68 games, stretching over almost four years, before Burnley's 1-0 win, on Thursday.

Chelsea, however, did not lose a single league game at Stamford Bridge from February 2004 until October 2008, a sequence more than covering Mourinho's first spell at the West London club.

'The records are there to be broken, even the most incredible ones in so many sports,' said the Portuguese, now in charge of Tottenham. 'There are some records that you look to them and you feel that it is impossible for somebody to do it.

'What Liverpool did is amazing and very, very difficult to achieve. Our record from Chelsea is still the record and is very difficult for somebody to do better than that. But congratulations to Liverpool for the amazing run they had by not losing a Premier League match at home for so long.'

Avram Grant was in charge when Chelsea's record was ended by Liverpool.

Mourinho did not lose a Premier League game at home until deep into his second spell at the Bridge, a defeat by Sunderland in April 2014.

Much of his 'Special One' mystique was built around the invincibility of his teams on home soil but the Spurs boss fears bigger teams are increasingly vulnerable to shock results.

'What was almost a scandal, years ago, is not anymore,' said Mourinho as he prepared his team for Monday's FA Cup tie at Wycombe. 'Any team can go to any stadium and get a result.

'The teams considered with less potential are not like that as much anymore, these clubs and professionals deserve the credit.

'I don't open my mouth anymore and say 'wow, what a crazy result.' There are no more crazy results.

'Every team, even those with the objective to be champions or top four, I am not surprised if these big teams have a run of matches where confidence drops a bit because of bad results.

'The reality is that nothing is eternal. Not consecutive victories and not consecutive defeats. Always the next matches are open with open results.'

Liverpool and Manchester United's Premier League match on Sunday prompted "hundreds" of complaints from supporters affected by colour blindness, with United's green change strip proving impossible to distinguish from Liverpool's traditional red shirts.

Despite using a white-and-black change kit for the majority of games this season when their red shirts clash with the home team, United wore an outfit described by kit supplier Adidas as "legend earth green" for the 0-0 draw at Anfield.

And with many television viewers unable to tell the two teams apart, the UK-based Colour Blind Awareness organisation saw its Twitter account, @colourblindorg, deluged by fans struggling to watch the game.

"It happens all the time; we have had a bad year this year," Kathryn Albany-Ward, the Colour Blind Awareness CEO, told ESPN. "We have had Southampton vs. Sheffield United and recently Liverpool vs. Man United. We have had loads.

"The NFL had to change their kit regulations to make sure that it didn't happen again.

"I think they do need to rise up to a large extent in the UK. People are aware of it, but they don't retain the information long enough to do something about it.

"If a major broadcaster was to take this on, and present what it is like to be colour-blind and watch a game to the right people. I think that would be great.

"The Premier League does act, and they do notify the clubs, as they know when these clashes will happen. I know because I was in touch with them today.

"They told United of this issue and United suggested a solution, but what they decided was not sufficient."

Sources have told ESPN that United were made aware of a kit issue by the Premier League 10 days before the Liverpool match but only asked to change socks from green to white.

To compound matters for United, who once changed an all-grey kit at half-time in a game at Southampton due to manager Sir Alex Ferguson complaining about his players being unable to see each other, midfielder Bruno Fernandes is currently an ambassador for colour blindness awareness in Portugal.

"As part of our EU project, the Portuguese FA have two ambassadors; one is Bruno Fernandes, but I don't think he is aware of this kit clash," Albany-Ward said. "The other is Jessica Silva, who plays for Olympique Lyonnais.

"They are aware of the issues it may cause, and they want to raise the profile of it, which they did in September on colour blindness awareness day."

Colour blindness (also known as colour vision deficiency) is a genetic condition which affects approximately 1 in 12 men and 1 in 200 women in the world. While there is an extremely rare version where people can't see colour at all, most sufferers will still be able to see colours but will confuse different shades. The most common type is "red/green colour blindness" which affects the spectrum containing those colours.

FIFA has rejected Atletico Madrid's appeal against Kieran Trippier's 10-week ban for breaching Football Association betting rules.
The ruling means the right-back is due to miss Atletico's next nine games in all competitions, including the first leg of the Champions League last-16 tie against Chelsea, before being eligible to return to face rivals Real Madrid in La Liga on March 7.
Trippier was fined £70,000 and handed the ban, later given worldwide effect by FIFA, in December for breaching the FA's betting regulations.
Atletico appealed to FIFA arguing the FA's 10-week ban was not applicable in Spain - and the suspension was subsequently lifted, allowing Trippier to continue playing for Atletico until a FIFA appeal committee decided his fate.
However, on Monday, a statement on FIFA's official website read: "The FIFA Appeal Committee has dismissed the appeal lodged by the club Atletico Madrid in a case concerning the player Kieran Trippier.
"As a consequence, the decision of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee passed on 23 December 2020 is confirmed, extending sanctions imposed on the player by the English FA to have worldwide effect."
Despite the outcome of the appeal, the FA failed in its own attempt last week to revise the effective dates of Trippier's ban - which ends on February 28 - meaning the 30-year-old could still continue playing if Atletico appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
Trippier, who was found guilty of four of the seven charges against him, missed two La Liga games due to the ban but returned and provided an assist in last Tuesday's 2-0 win over Sevilla.
Although he is due to miss the first leg of the Chelsea tie, Trippier could play in the return match at Stamford Bridge on March 17 and, if selected, for England when they take on San Marino, Albania and Poland in the last two weeks of March.

Phil Neville has stepped down as head coach of England with immediate effect, the Football Association announced on Monday, with his move to MLS side Inter Miami edging closer.

Neville has been in the role since January 2018 but announced in April 2020 that he would not continue the job past summer 2021 following the postponement of the European Championships until 2022.

He had been due to lead Team Great Britain in the Olympics this summer but sources have told ESPN that Neville has held talks with Inter Miami about taking over as head coach after the departure of Diego Alonso. Sources added that Neville flew out to Miami on Monday for further talks over the vacant manager's job.

Miami finished 10th in their debut season in the MLS Eastern Conference in 2020, but sources have said that David Beckham and his fellow investors are determined to see an improvement in performance in 2021, with Neville the leading contender to replace the outgoing Alonso.

"It has been an honour to manage England and I have enjoyed three of the best years of my career with the FA and the Lionesses," Neville said in a statement.

"The players who wear the England shirt are some of the most talented and dedicated athletes I have ever had the privilege to work with. They have challenged me and improved me as a coach, and I am very grateful to them for the fantastic memories we have shared.

"I'd like to thank the FA for the tremendous backing they have given me, in particular Sue Campbell and my talented support staff whose energy, commitment and enthusiasm has been crucial to helping us make the progress we have. I wish England Women every success in the future and look forward to following their journey in the years to come."

The timing of the departure is tricky for the FA as assistant coach Rehanne Skinner departed the national side in November to become Tottenham manager and new coach Sarina Wiegman isn't due to take up the role until after the Olympics in August.

Sources have told ESPN that a new interim coach will be announced by the FA in the next few days.

Normally, the person who manages England also takes charge of Team Great Britain during the Olympics.

"I want to pay tribute to Phil for his significant contribution during his three years with the FA. In particular, the commitment, dedication and respect he has shown the position has been clear to see, and I will personally miss our many conversations about ways we can improve and progress," FA director of women's football Baroness Sue Campbell added in a statement.

"After steadying the ship at a challenging period, he helped us to win the She Believes Cup for the first time, reach the World Cup semifinals and qualify for the Olympics. Given his status as a former Manchester United and England player, he did much to raise the profile of our team. He has used his platform to champion the women's game, worked tirelessly to support our effort to promote more female coaches and used his expertise to develop many of our younger players.

"Given the positive ongoing dialogue we have been having with Phil, we will be in a position to provide an update soon on an interim appointment, as well as provide a further update on the coaching situation regarding Team GB [Great Britain]."

Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi claimed a record sixth Ballon d’Or in Paris last night ahead of Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk and Juventus’ Cristiano Ronaldo.
The Argentine moved one clear of Ronaldo after the pair had been locked on five awards each as he reclaimed title he last won in 2015, with the Portuguese claiming the two subsequent gongs and Luka Modric surprisingly picking up the accolade last year to end the 10-year dominance of the two footballing icons.
This year’s victor finished astonishingly fifth in last term’s rankings and has come back with a vengeance this time around, producing a typically outstanding year in front of goal for Barca, hitting 40 strikes this calendar year and registering a further 17 assists to boot.
Lionel Messi
The forward did so in just 3516 minutes on the field, putting his club tally at slightly better than a goal or assist every 61.7 minutes.
He also claimed a 10th La Liga trophy and a Supercopa de Espana but was denied in the final of the Copa del Rey and was on the wrong end of a 4-0 battering at Anfield that saw Liverpool eventually go on to claim the Champions League title.
Meanwhile, Dutch defender, Matthijs de Ligt beat Nigeria international Samuel Chukwueze to win the Kopa Trophy at the 2019 Ballon d’Or going on in Paris, France.

Neymar has said that Lionel Messi is still his "idol," despite calling reports saying he wants to return to Barcelona as "fake news."
The Brazil international is into his second season with the French champions and was recently targeted by Marseille fans throwing objects as PSG ran out 2-0 winners in Le Classique at Stade Velodrome on Sunday.
Speaking with the Players' Tribune as part of a crossover interview with basketball star Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors, Neymar talked about playing and training alongside Messi, while he also had praise for Juventus' Cristiano Ronaldo.
"I played with Messi, who is, for me, one of the greatest footballers of all time, and he is my idol in football," he said. "With Messi, I learned every day, whether during our practice, or playing with him, or just watching him play. That made me stronger and it increased my capacity on the field because I kept learning a lot from him.
"As for Cristiano, he is a monster. Facing him is a pleasure and an honour, but we have to be more prepared. He is one of the greatest in football, so you get smarter, you get alert, but at the same time you learn a lot, too.
"So, they are two of the big guys that I can relate to, because I want to learn, I want more, I want to win, I want more trophies, score more goals. So, I keep learning from them every day."
Neymar, who recently released his own "Inked" comic book series, which sees tattoos come to life to fight crime, as explained by the comic's creators to Dan Hajducky at New York Comic Con, was also asked about the toughest moments of his career.
The 26-year-old listed his World Cup 2014-ending back injury and overcoming his injury earlier this year to participate in this summer's World Cup in Russia.
"The first when I injured my back," he said. "I was living a dream, playing in a World Cup, and then it was over because I got injured. For me it was like the end of everything.
"I asked myself: 'Am I ever going to be back on the field?' My family and my friends were really important for me at that moment -- they helped me to get up again.
"The other moment happened this year, after my first surgery. It was close to the World Cup, I did not see myself playing, and my family, my girlfriend [now ex Bruna Marquezine] and my friends stayed with me -- they made me believe in my dream: that I would play in a World Cup again. These two moments are important to me -- believing in this comeback."
Neymar went on to pick "amazing" fellow PSG and Brazil player Dani Alves as his funniest teammate but joked that the ex-Barca and Juventus man is "the oldest guy!"
Meanwhile, former PSG goalkeeping coach Nicolas Dehon recalled Les Parisiens' infamous Champions League capitulation to Neymar-inspired Barca in the Champions League back in 2017 and suggested that rally still haunts certain PSG players, as well as the potentially decisive impact of Thiago Motta's absence.
"Yes, I think that the PSG players on the pitch the night of the rally are still traumatised," he told RMC Sport. "Even if they have tasted other European disappointment, there are still after-effects.
"I do not know if it is a complex, but there is something blocking them. Something like that is always in the back of your mind. The next time they beat a European giant 4-0 at home, the dressing room will cogitate."
"Although he did not play, Thiago's half-time speech was excellent. It did not work out, but you really knew that the guy had played for the biggest clubs.
"If Thiago played, I do not know if PSG would have lost. He was important -- he would have spoken with the referee at key moments and applied some pressure. Thiago was missed, that is certain, and he knew Barcelona. He would have thrown himself into tackles and pressured them."

No fewer than 150,000 athletes both locally and internationally are expected to participate in the 4th edition of Access Bank Lagos City Marathon, Lagos State Governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode said on Monday.
Addressing a press conference at Lagos House in Alausa, Ikeja to officially announce commencement of preparations for the marathon which is billed to hold on February 2, 2019, Governor Ambode said the target of the State Government, was to use the forthcoming edition to take the tournament from the bronze label of International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) to silver, in partnership with the sponsors.
According to him, “The whole idea is to turn the competition from bronze to silver level. In the last three editions, we had between 100,000 and 120,000 participants. This time around, we want to make sure that come February 2019, we would have not less than 150,000 participants.
“The reason why we want to take it to that level is to create a new record and create a new platform to allow the 2019 edition to herald what is going to happen in the next six years. We believe strongly that in another six years when we are marking the 10th anniversary, we should actually become a top class marathon, and that is our vision for this competition.
“We believe that it is achievable. This is not necessarily about me; it is not even about the sponsors but about making Lagos to be on that top brand across the world and that is how cities are elevated to become global brand,” Governor Ambode said.
He said arrangement had equally been firmed up to encourage more local participation, as well as more physically-challenged athletes, a development he said necessitated the increase in prize monies for the two categories.
“We think obviously that we should pay more attention to our physically-challenged athletes this time around and also to embrace more of local participation. This time around, we would push more money to the local races and we would push more money to also our physically-challenged athletes to encourage more people to come in, while the main prize remain the same,” he said.
Speaking further at the media briefing which was attended by Nigeria’s sports icons including Mary Onyali, Samson Siasia, Waheed Akanni, Seye Ogunlewe, among others, the Governor said the idea of the marathon was part of his administration’s initiatives to use sports, entertainment and hospitality to grow the economy and positively engage the bourgeoning youth population in the State.
“Looking at some of Nigeria’s sport legends here, it just summarizes everything that we have tried to do in the last three and half years. The idea is that it is possible to create a new set of jobs and services using sports, using hospitality, using entertainment to create a new level of creativity and innovation and then drive the Nigerian economy into different direction that creates positive energy, and when you come to this kind of gathering and you are able to now see the private sector, sports people, it means that there is still hope in this country,” Governor Ambode said.
Besides, the Governor commended all the sponsors, media and all those who have contributed to the success of the marathon in the last three years, saying the development was a dream come true.
Earlier in his welcome address, Chairman of Lagos State Sports Commission, Dr. Kweku Tandor said the Lagos City Marathon, was the third of its kind after Brighton and Bournemouth Marathon in the United Kindgom to earn the prestigious IAAF Bronze Label only after its second edition, which held on February 10, 2018.
He said the Governor had already given approval for the setting up of a Lagos Marathon Village at the Teslim Balogun Stadium that would not only sustain the culture of the marathon but also serve as a rallying point in the quest by the present administration to stage mini-marathons in the five divisions of the State.
“It is going to serve as the headquarters for marathon races in Lagos. What we have in mind is to have sectoral marathons, Lagos Women Run is coming up next month, we have SWAN Marathon coming up in December and we also envisage that we are going to be having Epe Marathon, Ikorodu Marathon and so on.
“So we need a coordinating office under the direction of the Lagos State Sports Commission and that is the vision that led to the construction of that facility within Teslim Balogun to serve as the Lagos Marathon Village. Construction work will commence anytime from now,” Tandoh said.
He said the Governor had also approved the constitution of a Marathon Council that would be responsible for the supervision of the 2019 Marathon and going forward.
On his part, Managing Director of Access Bank, Mr. Herbert Wigwe said the commitment of the State Government under the leadership of Governor Ambode has ensured that the Lagos Marathon had become an annual event on the international athletics map.
He assured that Access Bank, the major sponsors of the Lagos Marathon would continue to give its full support to the event, adding that the 2019 edition will take the event a notch higher so as to receive an IAAF Silver Label for the marathon.
In his brief remarks, President of the Athletics federation of Nigeria (AFN), Engr. Ibrahim Gusau commended Governor Ambode for setting the pace for others to follow for others to follow in sports development, saying that the 2018 edition of the Lagos Marathon was highly rated amongst top competitions on the international calendar.

Former Chelsea and England captain John Terry has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 37 as he prepares to move into coaching.
Terry, who has been without a club since leaving Aston Villa on a free transfer in May and was close to joining Spartak Moscow in September before having a change of heart, announced the decision on his official Instagram account.
Last week, he helped prepare Chelsea U19s for a UEFA Youth League match against Danish club Molde that they went on to win 10-1, and he is reportedly set to return to Villa as assistant to Arsenal legend Thierry Henry.
"After 23 incredible years as a footballer, I have decided now is the right time for me to retire from playing," Terry said.
"I want to thank my amazing teammates, coaches, managers and backroom staff, who I was honoured to work with and learn from. They all guided me on my way to playing 717 games for the club I love, and it was a privilege to serve them as captain.
"They also helped me achieve my boyhood dream of playing for and captaining England, of which I am immensely proud.
"I look forward to the next chapter in my life and the challenges ahead."
Terry joined Chelsea's academy from West Ham at the age of 14 and made his first-team debut as a substitute in a League Cup victory over Villa in October 1998.
After a brief spell on loan at Nottingham Forest he established himself as a regular starter at Stamford Bridge and was named club captain by Jose Mourinho after Marcel Desailly's retirement in the summer of 2004.
He went on to lift 18 major trophies at Chelsea including five Premier League titles and the 2012 Champions League before joining Villa when he was released in the summer of 2017, leading the club to the Championship playoff final last season where they were defeated by Fulham at Wembley.
Regarded as one of the greatest defenders of his generation, Terry was also a hugely divisive player outside of Chelsea as a result of a series of off-field controversies.
He was stripped of the England captaincy twice and retired from international football in 2012 in a cloud of acrimony after the Football Association opted to charge him with racially abusing QPR defender Anton Ferdinand.
Terry was capped 78 times for England and made 717 appearances for Chelsea in all competitions, a tally bettered only by legendary former defender and captain Ron "Chopper" Harris.

Luka Modric has been crowned the 2018 FIFA Men’s Player of the year, after defeating fellow finalists Cristiano Ronaldo and Mohammed Salah at the London’s Royal Festival Hall on Monday night.
His emergence follows his exploits with Croatia who reached the final of this year’s FIFA World Cup in Russia and with Real Madrid who retained the UEFA Champions League.
This year’s edition brings an end to Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi’s 10-year domination of the most prestigious award. Both Ronaldo and Messi failed to show up at the awards.
‘It was an unbelievable season, the best season in my life,’ said Modric, 33. ‘I’m very proud of everything I achieved this year. It will be remembered, for sure, forever,’ said Modric after receiving his award.
Nine different categories were decided with the Goalkeeper of the Year going to Belgium goalkeeper, Thibaut Courtois, while Didier Deschamps won the Coach of the Year for guiding France to win the World Cup in Russia.
In doing so, Deschamps becomes the third man in history to win the World Cup both as a player and a manager, joining Brazil’s Mario Zagallo and Germany’s Franz Beckenbauer.
Liverpool’s Mohammed Salah won the Puskas award in recognition of his strike against Everton last season in the English Premier League which saw him wriggle past three defenders to score. Interestingly Salah’s goal was adjudged the best ahead of Gareth Bale’s bicycle kick against Liverpool during the UEFA Champions League final.

Marta had previously won the-defunct FIFA World Player of the Year award five years in a row between 2006 and 2010.
The voting system is decided by national team managers, national captains, media representatives and an online vote.

With Osaka in control of the match after taking the first set, Portuguese chair umpire Carlos Ramos sent Williams into a rage when he handed the 23-time Grand Slam champion a code violation in the second game of the second set after he spotted Williams’ coach Patrick Mouratoglou making some hand signals from the player’s box.
A string of bad behavior followed from Williams and she went on to incur a point penalty for smashing her racket before being slapped with a game penalty at 4-3 down after she launched into a verbal attack against Ramos, accusing him of being “a liar” and “a thief for stealing a point from me”.
Williams rant continued throughout the second set as she got more and more incensed with things going against her
The game penalty put Osaka 5-3 up and the 20-year-old Japanese kept her cool to pull off a historic win.
That coaching warning ignited the first outburst from Williams, who screamed at Ramos that she was a mother and would never cheat, adding that she would rather lose.
Order seemed to be restored when Williams finally broke Osaka for the first time to go up 3-1 but things quickly slid out of control when the Japanese 20th seed broke back, prompting the former world number one to smash her racket and Ramos to issue the point penalty.
That brought another tirade from Williams which was followed by a game penalty, bringing a shower of jeers from the packed stadium and another explosive outburst from the teary American.

Later Mouratoglou admitted he had been trying to coach Williams from the stands with some hand signals but accused Osaka’s coach Sascha Bajin of doing the same.

“I am honest. I was coaching,” said Mouratoglou. “I don’t think she looked one time.
“Sascha was coaching every point too.”
The controversial finish cast a cloud over what should have been Osaka’s shining moment.

“I know everyone was cheering for her and I’m sorry it had to end like this,” said Osaka. “I just want to say thank you for watching the match.
“It was always my dream to play Serena in the U.S. Open finals… I’m really grateful I was able to play with you.”
The result prevented Williams from winning a record-equaling 24th Grand Slam title.

Liberian President and former football star George Weah awarded ex-Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger with the country’s highest honour in a ceremony on Friday.
The award, it was disclosed, was for services to African football that included launching Weah’s own acclaimed career.
Wenger found Weah playing for Cameroon’s Tonnerre Yaounde and brought him to French side Monaco in 1988.
The move paved the way for the striker at some of Europe’s top clubs, including AC Milan, Paris St Germain and Chelsea.
In 1995 Weah was named World Footballer of the Year and won the Ballon d’Or, still the only African to win either award.
“You proved yourself as a teacher when you revolutionised forever the approach of scouting young talents all over the planet, particularly throughout Africa,” Weah said of Wenger during a ceremony in the capital Monrovia.
Wenger was named a Knight Grand High Commander of the Humane Order of African Redemption, the highest rank in Liberia’s Order of Distinction.
Fellow coach Claude Le Roy, who first told Wenger about Weah’s talent, also received the award on Friday.
Thousands of spectators clapped and cheered as Wenger received his medal in a hall at the national stadium adorned with the national red, white and blue.
Thousands more listened to the ceremony on the radio in the stadium, once a shelter for people displaced by a civil war that ended fifteen years ago.
Weah’s footballing successes helped launch his political career back home.
His unlikely rise, from kicking a ball on the dusty streets of a Monrovia slum to world fame, won him support in one of the world’s poorest countries.
Development in the West African country has been hobbled by the 14-year civil war that ended in 2003 and an Ebola outbreak which killed thousands from 2013-16.

He succeeded Nobel Peace Prize winner Ellen Johnson Sirleaf as president after a landslide election victory in December last year.
“I think Wenger deserves it. If he had not spotted ambassador Weah in those days, he would not have reached this level,” said university student Cynthia Kollie.
Some took issue with the awards, saying the president’s choice was based on personal ties rather than on what the recipients did for the country.
“President Weah is bestowing our nation’s highest honour on his two former football coaches who have made no direct impact or contributed to Liberia’s collective interest,” said Martin Kolle, a student.

Early in the mornings, Taiwo Awoniyi often sets forth at dawn with the popular praise and worship song of Glowreeyah Braimah – Your name is Yahweh – and the former junior international has revealed the reason behind such routine;  admitting his life and football career is nothing but a miracle.
“My favourite song has been composed and sung by many gospel singers,” began Awoniyi days after he signed another long five-year contract with Liverpool; and before going on with the late night conversation with our correspondent. Awoniyi, yet again, erupted into his favourite melodious chorus:  “Your name is Yahweh; your name is Yahweh; you’re the miracle working God; your name is Yahweh.”
Awoniyi’s career has been miraculous since he was spotted few years ago on the streets of Ilorin by United Academy Football Club. It was from there Awoniyi went to Imperial Soccer Academy owned by former Nigerian international midfielder, Seyi Olofinjana,  after posting a fine performance at the Copa-Coca Cola tournament  London where he was voted one of the Most Valuable Players.  He would soon be on his way to the national Under-15 side where he played along with the likes of Kelechi Iheanacho, Chidera Eze, amongst other budding talents with whom he was promoted to the national U-17 team, the Golden Eaglets class of 2013.
Sparingly used until the team’s main striker, Isaac Success, copped an injury in the second FIFA U-17 World Cup match against Sweden, Awoniyi seized the moment at the Khalifa Bin Zayed Stadium in Al Ain by scoring the important equaliser in that nervy 3-3 draw against the Europeans.
He ended the tournament with four important goals that helped Nigeria to her fourth title at the global cadet championship and his career has been on the upward swing ever since.
Two years later, his goals also helped the Flying Eagles to a gold-rious finish at the 2015 African Under-20  Nations Cup in Senegal Eagles which qualified the country to the 2015 FIFA Under-20 World Cup in New Zealand.

Awoniyi’s potentialities were there for all to see in New Zealand despite the Flying Eagles’ little success since he was snapped up by English Premier League side, Liverpool Football Club.
“I feel happy and really excited about this new contract with Liverpool and all thanks to God because he made all things possible,” offered Awoniyi with his usual pure smiles. “To be honest, I never see it  (the new contract) coming; all my goal was just to get better and work hard wherever I found myself  but  it’s part of what I asked  God before the beginning of the last season and he made it possible.
“This is a long-term contract which will keep me as LFC (Liverpool Football Club) player for more years and I know playing for Liverpool is what will happen eventually if I get the work permit and the coach finds me fitting in the style of play of the club
“But I believe giving me a new contract is due to the trust and belief the club and the coaching staff have in me based on how I’ve  developed  in  the first  three  years (of the initial contract). I just have to work harder and hopefully, God ‘ll make it a success.”
Awoniyi has every reason to be looking forward to his 21st anniversary on August 12 coupled with his sterling performances as a loanee out of Anfield in the last three years with three different clubs including FSV Frankfurt , NEC Nijmegen and Royal Excel Mouscron.
Last season, he had the credit of scoring 11 goals and providing seven assists in all competitions for Excel Mouscron in the Belgian Jupiler. His fine performance has now been rewarded  during the week with another loan deal to Gent who reportedly finished fourth in the Belgian top-flight last season to secure a spot for the final round of Europa League qualification.
“I’m not discouraged  in any way  despite the fact that I’ve not been able to play at Anfield with Liverpool since  I’ve been on loan to clubs in Germany, Holland and Belgium,” said Awoniyi who was shockingly left out of the national U-23 team to the Rio 2016 Olympic Football Tournament. “One thing that keeps me going even when I have disappointments is my belief and trust in God.
“Many times, God has revealed himself to me as God in my life and this alone can never get me discouraged about anything whatsoever in life as a whole. And I must also add that my family has been very important.
“From the start, playing football is just what I loved and I pray to God to allow my dreams come true and that’s why I chose Liverpool.
“Going to Gent is good for me; Gent is one of the best clubs in Belgium and with a very nice and good atmosphere to play. It’s an opportunity of another year of hard work and commitment in getting better as a player and hoping to develop more once giving the chance.
“Of course, I’m going to Gent for goals and glory. I’m going to develop more as a player and for the success of the team; and whatever we achieve as a team will be glory at the end of the championship. God willing, I’ll score goals as well if I have the opportunity.”
Incidentally as a loanee away from Anfield, Awoniyi has given a rare insight about his experience in Germany, Holland and Belgium in the last three years, adding that it has bolstered his confidence for a better and brighter future.
He volunteered: “I have had different experiences playing in Germany, Holland and Belgium. It was quite a tough time for me in Holland (with NEC Nijmegen) because I had less chance of playing most of the time. I only got my chance when the club changed the coach towards the end of the season; but the new coach gave me the chance and I was able to I score in the last five games.
“It was quite different in Belgium. I got enough of playing time with Mouscron immediately I joined them and this helped a lot as the league progressed.
“Generally, the first two years in Germany and Holland were more of a learning process for me; and I’m still learning and hopefully to get better by the grace of God.
“Sometimes it is difficult to stay the same all through, most especially when things are not going the way you wish for. I just keep trusting God and doing my best; and hoping it will end in success.”
Born August 12, 1997, Awoniyi has remarkably featured at all levels of the national team from  the U-15 to the U-23  and he believes he would soon earn his first international cap to follow on the legends of his former teammates that have been so blessed in that regard.
“Life has taught me lot,” stated the unpretentious guy. “Everyone has been taught one lesson or the other; life has taught me to trust and lean only on God since he alone knows and ordains all things. I believe God is the greatest.
“It is the dream of every player to be featured for the national team (the Super Eagles), but I have never been disturbed (that some of my former teammates at the youth levels were at Russia 2018) because I know it will one day happen. With my mates that are already there in the Super Eagles, it shows the hard work they’ve put into their game especially with the likes of (Wilfred) Ndidi and (Kelechi) Iheanacho and God has crowned it for them.
“The rest of us just have to work hard and pray God crown ours as well; hopefully if is destined, I will get there as well God willing.”
Following the end of FIFA World Cup Russia 2018, the name on the lip of everyone has been that of French youngster Kylian Mbape, but Awoniyi differs on the choice of the most exciting player on planet football at the moment.
“Currently, my most admired footballer in the world is Roberto Firmino of Liverpool,” stated Awoniyi whose style is being compared with legendary Nigerian striker, Rashid Yekini. “This is simply because he works so hard for the team and he plays more for the team upfront and makes the job easier for others
“I love his style; I love playing more for the team so that we can get the needed points. Yes, scoring goals is very important, as well as a striker but the team success is more important and I’m counting on God for goals and glory with Gent,” stated Awoniyi.
Certainly, the rank and file of  De Bufallos (The Buffalos) complete with  three other Nigerians including Samuel Kalu, Moses Simon and Anderson Esiti would be delighted with the arrival of Awoniyi to the Ghelamco Arena as the 2018/2019 Belgian Jupiler season gets underway.

When it comes to Usain Bolt potentially joining the A-League or any other issue in football, Tim Cahill believes it should boil down to what the fans want.
Central Coast chief executive Shaun Mielekamp has flown to London this weekend with high hopes of signing a deal for Bolt to undertake a six-week trial.
Football Federation Australia must tip in about $900,000 from its marquee fund, established to help clubs sign stars capable of boosting the A-League's profile, for the Mariners to sign the eight-time Olympic champion.
The FFA is yet to indicate whether Bolt would satisfy the criteria that governs whether clubs can access marquee funds, suggesting that bridge will be crossed after a trial.
"Really in football, all that matters is what the fans want," Cahill said when asked about Bolt's proposed A-League stint.
"He's a fantastic world-class athlete. Now he has to prove his fitness and prove he can play football.
"If he can, then it could be a success.
"I can't really comment on whether he can do it because I've never seen him play."
Bolt, who holds the 100m and 200m world records, retired from sprinting last year and has been linked with moves to the Central Coast Mariners, the Las Vegas Lights, as well as clubs in Turkey and Hungary.
Many pundits believe signing the Jamaican sprinter would be a poor use of money from FFA's marquee pot of $3 million.
Sydney FC captain Alex Brosque has no issue with the prospect of the fund being used to recruit Bolt.
"It's good. I think it's great. If we can attract big names, that's what we want to do," Brosque told AAP.
"We want bums on seats.
"If someone like Usain is going to do that -- provided he can provide something on the field for the Mariners -- then I'm all for it."
Bolt has already trained with German club Borussia Dortmund, Norwegian outfit Stromsgodset and South African side Mamelodi Sundowns this year.
"To have him here and everything he can bring, in terms of media and awareness, would be great," Brosque said.
"The fact he's trialling is very good.
"If he's good enough, it'd be great to see him on the field. Provided I'm not marking him then all good."

Belgium have beaten Brazil 2-1 in Kazan to qualify for the semi-finals of the 2018 FIFA World Cup home, sending the five-time World champions home.
The Samba Boys  had conceded just one goal in their past four games in Russia but were behind early when Nacer Chadli’s corner struck Fernandinho’s arm and flew into the net, the 10th own goal of this World Cup.
Fernandinho’s Manchester City team-mate Kevin de Bruyne doubled Belgium’s lead with a sublime arrowed finish from 20 yards after Romelu Lukaku’s powerful run.

Brazil could find no answer until a 76th-minute headed reply from Renato Augusto, with star man Neymar virtually anonymous other than three poor attempts to win a penalty, although Referee Milorad Mazic perhaps should have pointed to the spot when Vincent Kompany dived in on Gabriel Jesus.
Neymar did finally come to life in injury time, forcing a brilliant save from Thibaut Courtois with a curling shot from outside the area, but it was not enough to sustain his team’s challenge.
Belgium will battle France, who had earlier on sent Uruguay home with a 2-0 victory, in Saint Petersburg on Tuesday 10th July, for a place in the final of the 2018 FIFA World Cup

NFF President Amaju Pinnick was named Vice President of the Confederation of African Football on Thursday, according to a statement on CAF's official website.
Pinnick replaces Kwesi Nyantakyi, the former President of the Ghana Football Association, who resigned last month in the wake of corruption allegations sparked by an undercover investigation in his homeland.
A statement signed by CAF General Secretary Amr Fahmy said CAF President Ahmad Ahmad made the appointment after consultation with the Emergency Committee
"This decision is immediately applicable, in accordance with article 27 para. 2 of the Statutes, which will be ratified by the Executive Committee in its session scheduled on the 27 and 28 of September 2018," read Fahmy's statement.
With the appointment, Pinnick becomes the first Nigerian to hold the second highest executive position at the continental body.
Of his predecessors, Oyo Orok Oyo was second Vice President before being named as an honorary Vice President, while Amos Adamu was an executive committee member.
Pinnick's elevation comes in the wake of a crisis back home in Nigeria, where a court order has supported Christopher Giwa's claim to be the rightfully elected president of the NFF.
The latter subsequently took charge of the federation's HQ.
The NFF have challenged the ruling, and the case is scheduled to come up for hearing on July 10.

Algeria are considering a joint bid with Tunisia and Morocco for the 2030 World Cup, the country's sports minister has said.
Morocco recently bid for the 2026 tournament, but were beaten by a North American coalition of United States, Canada and Mexico. However, Algerian sports minister Mohamed Hattab told reporters that the Maghreb countries are "studying the possibility" of making an immediate offer for the next World Cup.
"An application from the Maghreb with Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia can be achieved through existing infrastructure as well as future projects," said Hattab.
"When we look at our cities, with the sporting and culture facilities present, we are able to consider that we can host major world events."
Morocco has made five bids to host the World Cup, but has so far been unsuccessful on every occasion.
