Cristiano Ronaldo has not broken the all-time goalscoring record- Czech Football federation

It was widely assumed that the Juventus superstar had become the top scorer in history when he notched his 760th career goal in Wednesday night’s Italian Super Cup clash against Napoli.

It was his 85th Juve goal, added to five for Sporting Lisbon, 118 for Manchester United, 450 for Real Madrid and 102 for Portugal.

He’s now in front of Bican’s tally of 759 unless you instead believe the Czech-Austrian forward, whose clubs included Rapid Vienna and Slavia Prague, actually scored 805 goals between 1931 and 1955.

That is the total credited to him by the Rec.Sport.Soccer Statistics Foundation (RSSSF), although it includes 27 goals scored for Rapid’s reserve teams, as well as some unofficial internationals.

The RSSSF also credits two Brazilian greats with higher tallies than Ronaldo – putting Romario on 772 and Pele on 767.

But here the waters become even murkier. Both Brazilians claim to have bagged more than 1,000 goals apiece.

Romario marked his 1,000th strike in 2007, but the total counts a number of friendlies and youth games.

And in a statement of their own the Czech football federation explained why Bican remains above Ronaldo in the standings.

“As Cristiano Ronaldo approaches the legendary Josef Bican in the number of goals scored in official matches, questions are multiplied by how many goals the Czechoslovak gunner has scored,” they said.

“The answer is – Josef Bican scored 821 goals in official matches.

“Goals from matches in the first and second leagues, national cups, the Central European Cup and national team selections are included. On the contrary, friendly matches are not included in the statistics, with the exception of the national team.

“The FACR Commission on History and Statistics has decided to shed a brighter light on this case.

“Websites of renowned statisticians, RSSSF and IFFHS, state that Josef Bican has 805 goals in official matches, but they note with one breath that the 1952 year, in which Bican played the second highest competition for Skoda Hradec Kralove, is not included.”
