A yet-to-be-identified man yesterday committed suicide by throwing himself off the roof of the Grand Mosque in Islam’s holiest city of Mecca.
The state news agency, SPA, quoted the police as saying:”A foreigner threw himself from the roof of the Grand Mosque in Mecca” to the courtyard below, “resulting in his instant death.”
The body was transported to hospital, with an investigation underway “to determine the victim’s identity, what led to the act and how he was able to commit it despite the existence of a metal fence,” SPA said.
Last year, a Saudi man tried to set himself on fire in front of the Kaaba but was stopped by security forces.
Every year, millions of Muslim pilgrims from across the world travel to Mecca and Medina, Islam’s second holiest site, also in western Saudi Arabia.

The Senior Pastor, Dunamis International Gospel
Centre (DIGC), Abuja, Dr Paul Enenche, has
released 2018 prophecies declaring the New Year
as the year of open doors.
Enenche predicted during the Cross Over Night
service in Abuja that the year would mark a new
beginning for the nation and its people as well as
supernatural opening of new opportunities.
He added that 2018 would also be a year that
God would release severe judgment upon the
wicked and those holding the country to ransom.
According to him, it is a season that God shall do
what he wants irrespective of what men want to
restore the years of lost that the country has
experienced.
“There shall be drastic shift in dimension in all
realms in an unpredictable manner,’’ the cleric
said.
On his part, Special Apostle Funsho Oshoro, the
Chairman, Cherubim and Seraphim Movement,
Abuja District Headquarters, said in his message
that Nigerians should be upright in all they do.
Oshoro called on Nigerians to transform
themselves in the year 2018, adding that the
Federal Government will not be able to do it
alone.
However, he admonished Nigerians to be
politically and spiritually matured in all they do.
According to him, those that are in authority
should do it well because if they do it right,
automatically the Lord will see them through the
year 2018.
“There is a lot of blessings but we must do it
right with God; we must know him; we must plan
and set a goal for ourselves for that is what we
desire from God.
“Forget the past and failure of 2017 so as to be
purposeful; get connected to God; walk with wise
men that have evidence of prosperity in the sense
that they have accomplished a lot.
“The message is not for the church alone. The
message is for the whole country,’’ Oshoro said.

The Kaduna State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board
said it would commence refunding over N140
million to pilgrims who performed pilgrimage in
2016 and 2017 from Thursday, Dec. 28.
The Overseer of the Board, Imam Husaini Ikara,
made this known in a statement signed by the
board’s Public Relations Officer, Yunusa
Abdullahi.
Ikara said that each of 2016 pilgrims would be
paid N1,265. 65, while 2017 pilgrims would
receive N12,862.08 as refunds for transportation,
feeding and other services not rendered to them
during the Hajj periods.
He said that 29 intending pilgrims, who were
unable to go on pilgrimage in 2017, would be
refunded all their money with the exception of
administrative charges including cost of main and
hand luggage as well as the uniform which had
already been given to them.
Ikara called on the affected pilgrims to contact
their registration officers with their International
Passport that had either 2016 or 2017 Hajj visa
before being paid.
He advised registration officers to ensure all the
affected pilgrims received their refunds after full
identification and urged the pilgrims to also
comply with modalities for the payment for
accountability and transparency.
The overseer said that the refund was money the
board received from National Hajj Commission of
Nigeria (NAHCON) earlier this month for services
not rendered by the various service providers to
the pilgrims during the pilgrimage. (NAN)

CATHOLIC leader Pope Francis says he has been praying for peace and stability in Nigeria.
The Pope made this known when he met with the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, in Saint Peters Square, Vatican City.
The Speaker had led Nigerian delegation to the Holy See for a morning mass, where nationals and leaders from different countries of the world gathered to join His Holiness for the devotion and receive blessings from the Pontiff.
Dogara, who described the meeting with Pope Francis as “awesome”, stated that he was pleasantly surprised and delighted to know that the pontiff is well-informed about the happenings in Nigeria.
“The moment I was introduced to him as the Speaker of the Nigerian Parliament, he said, ‘how is Nigeria and how are you working for the peace of Nigeria?’” Dogara said.
Pope Francis then told the Speaker that he always prays for peace in Nigeria, saying: “I pray for the peace of Nigeria and pray for me also.”
The Speaker was accompanied by the Nigerian Ambassador to the Holy See, General George Godwin Umo (retd), who said the Pope has been holding mass in honour of the 26 Nigerian girls that died in the Mediterranean Sea while trying to enter Italy few weeks ago.
Dogara is in Italy on the invitation of the President of the Italian Chamber of Deputies, Ms Laura Boldrini, for an international conference on “Human Trafficking and women empowerment: The Partnership between Nigeria and Italy.”
