President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday assured his supporters that their handwork and loyalty would be adequately rewarded.
Buhari gave the assurance in Abuja while delivering a speech at the inauguration of his support group tagged, “ Together Nigeria’’.
The event was organised by the Buhari Support Organisation.
Buhari, who expressed gratitude to the organisation, said, “some individuals and organisations might be feeling disappointed because we have not been able to please everyone.
“I would like to assure you that this time, handwork and loyalty will be rewarded adequately.’’
According to the President, the event reminds him of the political struggle and support he has been enjoying from the group over the years.
He, therefore, endorsed the plan put in place by the Buhari Support Organisation to reposition the organisation and strategise towards success in the next election and beyond.
“This once again gives me further encouragement, hope and optimism in our political journey,” Buhari said.
While acknowledging the overwhelming nationwide support he has been enjoying over the years, Buhari said his administration was already celebrating the landmark achievements so far recorded.
He also expressed appreciation to the Nigerian celebrities for their contributions to the growth of the country’s entertainment industry as well as projecting the good image of Nigeria abroad.
“I would like to thank our celebrities for projecting the image of Nigeria globally and your contributions to our entertainment industry,’’ he said.
‘Together Nigeria’, which is made up of Nigerian celebrities, is an advocacy group supporting the re-election of President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019. (NAN)
A fresh battle is brewing in the National Assembly between supporters and opponents of President Muhammadu Buhari following his rejection of the Electoral (Amendment) Bill 2018.
Some Senators and members of the House of Representatives are plotting to override the President’s veto.
The plot was said to have been mooted after some of the anti-Buhari legislators got wind of the President’s decision on Thursday.
Buhari’s letter on his decision to reject the bill reached the leadership of the National Assembly on Friday.
A former Senate Leader Ali Ndume and a supporter of the president believes those plotting to override Buhari cannot muster the two- thirds majority to carry out their threat.
He said the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is behind the plot and will fail.
Investigation by our correspondent showed that some pro and anti-Electoral (Amendment) Bill 2018 held separate meetings in Abuja on Friday and yesterday on the way forward.
While those in PDP opted to override the President’s veto, those in APC are backing Buhari because the bill might ‘distort’ preparations for the 2019 poll.
Some members of the National Assembly, especially those from the North are angry that the opposition is politicizing the bill.
They alleged that some of their colleagues have been insinuating that the bill was meant to check rigging in the North. At a meeting of the anti-Buhari legislators held in Maitama District Abuja ,participants agreed to override the President’s assent.
They also plotted to “make a political capital of the presidential decline by putting Buhari on the spot and portraying him as not ready to conduct free and fair polls.”
They also reached a consensus to mobilize civil society organizations to mount pressure on the international community against Buhari.
Another drastic option is a suggestion by some Senators and Representatives to make the signing of the bill a condition for the presentation of 2019 Budget by Buhari.
A ranking Senator said: “We have resolved to override the President’s assent because his reasons are really untenable. No one is out to derail the 2019 polls. Instead, the bill contains some amendments that will ensure a free and fair process.
“Although we had anticipated it, we got to know of the decline by the President on Thursday. The President cannot have his cake and eat it this time around.”
A second term member of the House of Representatives, who attended a separate stock-taking session in Asokoro District, said: “Some of us are backing the President because certain provisions are difficult to implement due to time constraint.
“For instance, Section 44 of the bill states that parties must be invited to inspect their identities and show whether they approve or otherwise of how they are represented on electoral materials.
“This amounts to interference in INEC’s work. Why should parties be privy to how ballot paper is designed?
“Having awarded the contract for ballot papers, the National Assembly cannot draw back the electoral commission.”
A Senator from North-Central admitted that Senators and Representatives have been holding consultations along what he described as ‘our fault lines.’ “The truth is that the nation needs more time to adopt the Electoral (Amendment) Bill 2018. We have met and our position is that the bill should take effect after the 2019 poll.”
A member of the House of Representatives from Sokoto State said: “I do not see those in support of the bill getting two-thirds to override the President’s veto.” A former Senate Leader, Senator Ali Ndume told our correspondent it is impossible for those anti-Buhari Senators and Representatives to secure two-thirds to override the veto on Electoral Bill.
Ndume said: “The President has his reasons but there is Article 2 of ECOWAS Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance that prohibits passing of a law within a period shorter than six months to the election.
“The President has the right to withhold his assent. I am standing with Mr. President on his decision.
“The threat by PDP that they would override Mr. President is just their usual dream because they don’t have the number and they will not have the number.
Responding to a question, Ndume said: “Did Mr. President threaten to rig the 2019 poll? Anybody threatening or raising alarm about rigging is the rigger. Buhari by his personality and character is not somebody that will rig election or encourage rigging.
“Let me add that the same Buhari went into election because PDP rigged three times. They think everyone is in the same position like PDP or would take advantage to rig election.
“We assure them that APC will not rig elections because it is not in our character.”
There were indications at press time that the National Assembly had a legal hurdle to cross in overriding the President because of a case in court.
Three political parties have filed an action at the Federal High Court, Abuja seeking an order of the court to stop President Muhammadu Buhari from assenting to the Electoral Amendment Bill 2018.
The parties are Advanced Peoples Democratic Alliance, (APDA), Allied Peoples Movement, (APM) and Movement for Restoration and Defence of Democracy (MRDD).
They also asked the court to declare that signing the bill into law would truncate the 2019 general election.
The respondents in the suit are the Senate President, the Speaker, House of Representatives, the INEC Chairman and the Attorney-General of the Federation
It was learnt that until this matter is disposed of by the court, any action taken by the National Assembly on the bill will be subjudice.”
The All Progressives Grand alliance (APGA) has warned that all officials who subverted the party’s primary election processes in Anambra would be sanctioned.
Chief Ifeatu Obi-Okoye, the Secretary of APGA reconciliation Committee for Anambra, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Awka on Sunday.
Obi-Okoye said the party was saddened that officials who were given the responsibility of conducting the exercise took undue advantage of members.
He said the committee headed by Dr Uju Okeke was already making progress in the mandate to ensure that justice was done and that peace returned to APGA.
“Any member of the party who has been involved in a form of criminality in the course of the conduct of the primary elections will definitely be brought to book.
“The party has directed us to make strong recommendations against any member of the party who has been involved any act that has brought the party to public disrepute.
“We are also considering assuaging all grievances within the statutory limitations like how and when to make substitutions if the need arises, what is more important is bringing back peace to the party,” he said.
Obi-Okoye, who is the Special Adviser to Gov. Willie Obiano on Political Matters, however said the crisis was exaggerated with ‘so much noise’ on the internet.
He said APGA conducted lawful primary elections in Anambra, but admitted that the party was overwhelmed by the surge in population of those interested in running on its platform.
He disclosed that 215 aspirants contested the APGA primary election in for Anambra House of Assembly which had 30 seats
“We had about 215 aspirants for 30 State House of Assembly seats in Anambra, what we are doing now is an in-house management of the situation.
“In Aguata 1 Constituency, we had 18 persons contesting for one ticket; in Aguata 2, they were 13; so it was a kind of burden on the party.
“It is on record that in Anambra only APGA conducted primary elections unlike other political parties; we had our challenges in logistics and personnel who were detailed to conduct the exercise.
“There was also the challenge of a large number of aspirants seeking nomination of the APGA.
“The euphoria of 21/21 win in the governorship and 7/7 in the senatorial election, those victories brought in a bandwagon where people joined the party massively.
“I don’t want us to take seriously all that we read in the social media because that is one platform that allows people to express themselves in much unguarded manner.
“If we take the information in social media as the basis for any evaluation we will not get the correct picture of what is happening,” he said.
Obi-Okoye described the crisis as storm in a tea cup as it would not affect the fortune of the party in the general election, saying APGA foundation is strong.
“We have been working and the response we are getting is quite commendable.
“Hopefully in two weeks when we are supposed to round off the assignment, we would have been able to douse a lot of tension and bring back the family spirit we have in APGA.
“The foundation of APGA remains solid and vibrant; as usual we will put our house in order and do well in the elections,” he said. (NAN)
The Supreme Court came down hard on Monday on the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Court of Appeal in Port Harcourt Division over their handling of the processes leading to the party’s congresses held in Rivers State in May this year.
A panel of five justices of the court held, in a judgment, that the APC acted in “condemnable, egregious and preposterous” manner by proceeding to conduct its ward, local government and state congresses of May 19, 20 and 21, 2018, respectively, in Rivers State, in disregard of a pending court order restraining it from so acting.
The judgment was on an appeal by 23 APC members, including Ibrahim Umar, David Ndah, Prince Morris, Kudem Bale, and Otokim Jack, who were aggrieved by the outcome of APC’s congresses.
Justice Centus Nweze, who read the lead judgment, upheld the appeal and proceeded to set aside the June 21, 2018 order of the Court of Appeal, with which it stayed the execution of the May 11 and May 30 orders made by the High Court of Rivers State stopping the conduct of the congresses.
Justice. Nweze, after reviewing the handling of the case by the Part-Harcourt division of the Appeal Court, said: “Regrettably, the lower court condoned the condemnations, egregious and preposterous approach of the respondent herein (APC).”
He said the Supreme Court will not support such unruly conduct as exhibited by the APC in Rivers State.
Jusice Nweze added: “Well, this court (Supreme Court) has a duty to resist this attempt to achieve forensic victory through jiggery-pokery. True to its constitutional mandate, this court cannot lend its weight to this unhealthy approach.
“Therefore, I have a duty to allow this appeal. Accordingly, I hereby enter an order setting aside the ruling of the lower court delivered on June 21, 2018.”
Justice Nweze upheld the contention by the appellants that the Appeal Court ought not to have granted the order of stay of execution in favour of APC while the party was still in disobedience of the order of the High Court.
Justice Nweze noted that on May 11, 2018, “not minding the invasion of the court by hoodlums, an invasion that was charaterised by the destruction of items of the court, the court was still able to deliver its ruling and issued an interlocutory injunctive orders restraining the respondents from conducting its congresses….
“As if that was not enough, on May 19 and May 20, and May 21, respectively, in notwithstanding the pendency of the injunctive orders, the respondent (APC) went ahead to conduct the ward, local government and state congresses.
“This defiance has prompted the high court’s order of mandatory injunction of May 30. The restraining order cancels state congresses of May 12, 19, 20 and 21.
“Despite the subsisting orders of the court, orders of May 11 and 30, the respondent in the most impudent manner, the besieged the Court of Appeal, Port Harcourt Division for an entreaty to favour it with an order of stay of proceedings and order of stay of execution.
“The lower court sitting on both, favoured the respondent, that is, the applicant before it, with an order staying the execution of the ‘order of injunction made by the High Court of Rivers State, Port H in the ruling delivered by Nwogu J, on Friday, May 11, 2018.’
“The simple truth therefore, is that, when the respondent applied for stay of execution before the lower court, it was in gross disobedience of the positive order of the trial court.
“From all indications, notwithstanding this unfortunate development, the lower court still found it legitimate to favour the respondent with a positive of order of stay of execution. This was wrong,” Justice Nweze said.
He faulted the Appeal Court’s failure to abide by the doctrine of “stares decisis” and refusal to subject itself to the Supreme Court’s decision in the case – the Military Governor of Lagos State Vs Ojukwu. He said the Appeal Court, by its conduct, “embarked on a journey of self-immolation and the Japanese ‘harakiri,” a journey, Justice Nweze described as a sacrilegious judicial exercise of discretion.
He said: “Indeed, nothing could be a more sacrilegious judicial exercise of discretion than the lower court’s ill-advised embarkation on this ill-fated journey of self-immolation, or what the Japanese call the harakiri, that means suicide, all in an attempt to in an attempt to circumvent the authority of this court.”
Justice Nweze described the decision of the Appeal Court to disregard the established precedent of the Supreme Court as gross insurbordination.
He said, “This court (the Supreme Court) is the highest court in Nigeria; its decisions bind every court, authority or person in Nigeria.
“By the doctrine of stares decisis, the courts below are bound to follow the decision of the Supreme Court. The doctrine is a sine qua non for certainty in the practice and the application of law.
“The refusal therefore, by a judge of the court below to refuse to be bound by this court’s decision is gross insubordination.”
Justice Nweze described the attempt by APC’s lawyer, Hakeem Afolabi (SAN) to distinguish the case from the Supreme Court’s decisions in Military Governor of Lagos State vs. Ojukwu, and Odogu vs. Odogu, as superficially attractive, but feeble.
He frowned at what he described as APC’s lawyer’s “advocacy style” in the case, and said lawyers must draw a distinction between their role and status as a lawyer, and their political interests.
Lawyer to the appellants, who are loyal to the Senator Magnus Abe camp of the party, Henry Bello said the imperative of the Supreme Court’s judgment was “a warning to politicians to always be obedient to court orders ahead of 2019 elections.”
Alleging exclusion, Ibrahim Umar, David Ndah, Prince Morris, Kudem Bale, Otokim Jack and others had, in May 2018 sued the APC and sought to stop the conduct of congresses of the party in the state.
Upon the plaintiffs’ application, Justice Chiwendu Nwogu of the Port Harcourt Division of the High Court of Rivers State, on May 10, 2011, granted an interlocutory injunction restraining the APC from conducting the congresses.
The party went ahead to conduct the congresses on May 19, 20 and 21.
This prompted Justice Nwogu to nullify the congresses in his ruling of May 30.
Dissatisfied with the May 30 ruling of the High Court, the APC proceeded to the Port Harcourt Division of the Court of Appeal, praying for an order of stay of execution of both the May 11 and May 30 orders of the High Court and an order of stay of proceedings before the said High Court.
The Court of Appeal on June 21, 2018, granted the APC’s request, a development which prompted the plaintiffs in the High Court to appeal to Supreme Court to challenge the order of stay of execution granted by the appeal court.
Lagos State House of Assembly has denied the rumour going round, both in the social media and regular media, that it was planning to impeach the Governor of the state, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode.
Speaking at plenary on Monday, the Speaker of the House, Hon. Mudashiru Obasa said that there was no truth in the rumour.
Obasa revealed that he had received telephone calls and enquiries from prominent members of the public over the alleged impeachment moves against Ambode.
According to him, Solidarity Group of Nigeria and a faction of the APC in Lagos State, led by Mr. Fuad Oki had been insinuating that the lawmakers in the state threatened the Governor to open the state treasury for them, and that they threatened to impeach him if he failed to do so.
“We are not embarking on any impeachment process against the governor now. If there would be an impeachment, it would be from the governor and if there would not be any need for impeachment, it would be from him based on his actions.
“Even at that, impeachment is constitutional, so many speakers, senate presidents, presidents and others have been impeached all over the world. So, nobody can threaten us if it happens because we are representatives of the people.
“We don’t need the wailers to guide us in performing our duties. It is not out of place for us to do our job,” he said.
The Speaker added that if there was going to be an impeachment, It would be done in the open, but that there was nothing like that for now, adding that the people would know if any impeachment against the governor would happen.
He however, promised that the Assembly was working with the governor to ensure peace and development in the state.
This was corroborated by the Majority Leader, Hon. Sanai Agunbiade, who stated that the constitutional procedure for impeachment does not harbour secrecy, adding that members of the public would know if it would happen.
It will be recalled that the Assembly last week ordered the 20 Local Governments and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) in the state to direct the operators of Private Sector Participation (PSP) involved in refuse clearing in the state to go back to work.
The House had also disowned Visionscape that was contracted by Ambode to take over refuse clearing job in the state from the PSP Operators over one year ago.
It was added that the state government would have to return all the money they have paid to Visionscape and that the heaps of refuse all over the state was an indication that the organisation lacked the capacity to do the job.
Governor Mohammed Umar Jibrilla (Bindow) of Adamawa State has declared unreserved loyalty to President Muhammadu Buhari and support for his candidacy of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the 2019 presidential election.
The declaration came against the background of the emergence of a son of the state, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, as the presidential candidate of opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), a development which has divided an Adamawa State that was otherwise solidly behind Buhari.
The state Commissioner of Information and Strategy, Mr Sajoh Ahmed, who spoke for Bindow at a press conference in the Government House in Yola Monday, condemned what he described as a looming blackmail by elements who he said were planning to design a poster pairing Bindow with ‘the presidential candidate of another party’, a ploy which he said was wicked and baseless.
“Bindow is an APC governor working for APC and has no intention to support or canvass support for any presidential candidate outside APC. He has no support for any candidate other than Buhari,” he asserted, adding that anybody who prints any document to portray anything to the contrary should be disregarded.
The commissioner who refrained from specifically mentioning Atiku’s name in his initial address, submitted at the question and answer session of the press conference that Atiku as an Adamawa man winning the presidential ticket of a major opposition party was ‘a factor’ but that Bindow already had the candidate of his party and that Adamawa would always choose reality rather than promises.
He said Buhari had done enough for Adamawa State since he became president to make the people prefer him to any other candidate.
All Progressives Congress (APC) stalwart Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu said last night that his position on the candidates battling for the party’s governorship ticket remains.
Tinubu’s media adviser Tunde Rahman said last night in a statement on Tinubu’s meeting with the President in Abuja:
“Asiwaju Tinubu and Chief Bisi Akande were invited by President Buhari and it turned out to be a good and productive meeting. Asiwaju was quite pleased to have conferred with the President who has always shown himself to be a committed party member and a true democrat.
“Just like the President, he is looking forward to a good and credible primary that is peaceful and free of rancor. As previously stated, Asiwaju plans to vote in this primary and his position regarding the relative merits of the candidates remains unchanged.”
In the race are incumbent Akinwunmi Ambode and former Commissioner Jide Sanwo-Olu. The primary election is today.
Asiwaju said of his choice in a statement on Monday: “I am encouraged by the presence of a candidate in this primary, who has served the state in senior positions in my administration, the Fashola administration and even in the current one. While possessing a wealth of experience and exposure, he is a young man endowed with superlative vision and commitment.
“Most importantly, he understands the importance of the blueprint for development. He esteems it as a reliable and well-conceived vehicle for the future development of the state. He also knows the value of reaching out and working with others in order to maximise development and provide people the best leadership possible. With people like him at the helm, the state will write the proper history for itself.”
In 377 wards across 20 local governments, members of the APC will vote today.
Every card-carrying member of the party is eligible.
There will be no ballot box and ballot paper. Party members will queue behind the posters of their preferred aspirant.
The mode of the primary is “open direct primary”, which involves open and physical counting of members on queue behind the posters of their chosen aspirants.
They will be accredited by 9a.m. Election will take place by 12 noon. Members will show their APC Identification Card. No white slip will be accepted, Chairman Tunde Balogun said yesterday.
Posters of the two aspirants will be held by their agents. After accreditation, party members will queue behind them.
“They will be counted on the queue and recorded. After that, voting ends. The agents of aspirants will sign. Then, the results will be taken to the local governments, the final collation will be done at the state level,” Balogun told The Nation in an interview.
The chairman urged members to troop out to participate in the exercise.
He said the shadow poll will be very transparent and peaceful across the wards, urging members to maintain decorum as they participate in the exercise.”
Ambode is campaigning on continuity. Sanwo-Olu has promised an all-inclusve government – if elected.
Chairman of the electoral panel former Cross River State Governor Clemant Ebri attributed logistics challenge to the shift of the poll from Monday till today.
He told Ambode when he visited the Government House in Alausa: “I also like to apologise for the delay; it had to be postponed as a result of logistics in Lagos, Imo and some other states because of the pressure and work load from the secretariat and other developments that have taken place.”
Raising the stakes on the shadow election, Ebri said: “Lagos is more like a decider and like they say, when Lagos sneezes the rest of the country catches cold.
“So, that is why we are very careful about what we are doing and the National Chairman asked me to send his best wishes to you and ask us to come and do the right thing to the satisfaction of all members.
“Moreso, the President of this country stands for transparency and detests corruption and, a situation where no one feels manipulated.
“The process we are laying out is such that will ensure and guarantee transparency and credibility. We have people of integrity in this panel.
Other members of the panel are: Alhaji Ahmed Mahmud Gumel as secretary; Mr Nze Chidi Duru; Chief Clever Egbeji, Sen. Clever Ikisikpo and Ambassador Jerry Ugokwe.
On the integrity of the members, Ebri said: “These are not rookies in politics; they are people who have been tested. You can see senators, former governors, former deputy governor, former member of the House of Representatives; so, this is a star-studded team.
“I can assure you that we have all the experience that you want and you can think about to conduct this exercise. We assure you of our sincerity and transparency and we seek your cooperation in providing a level-playing field.’
Ambode replied: “I receive this election team as being acceptable and credible to me enough to discharge their civic responsibility to the best of their abilities and to also say that whatever it is that is the outcome of the primaries, your presence has also shown that this will be credible and this will be acceptable to me.”
“So, it is very clear to me, all I seek is credible primaries, transparent primaries and level playing ground that we will all be proud of at the end of the day for the outcome,” the governor said, adding:
“There were issues that we have raised that we are also trying to correct.
“The bottom line is this, we are family, we must not go into the elections divided because this is the very first time that our party is controlling the centre and also the state; that is what I want us to continue.
“The issues that I raised have been put in form of a letter which I will pass to the chairman and I believe the committee will look into it judiciously.
“And also I welcome the stakeholders meeting which will allow you feel the pulse of what is going on in the state.”
The panel’s members attended a stakeholders meeting at the Lagos State APC secretariat in Ogba last night to perfect the planning for the election.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has described as irresponsible and baseless, the allegation that uncollected Permanent Voter Cards were being released ahead of the Osun State Governorship rerun election.
Mr. Rotimi Oyekanmi, Chief Press Secretary to INEC Chairman dismissed the allegation in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Abuja.
Oyekanmi asked the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP), which made the allegation, to provide the proof.
“It is highly irresponsible of the CUPP to make a wild, unsubstantiated allegation such as this at this time.
“What exactly is their motive? The media should ask the CUPP to provide concrete proof about this allegation.
“INEC has conducted 191 different types of elections, including six governorship elections since 2015.
“If the Commission did not manipulate any of these elections, why will it do so now with the Osun Governorship election?
“The CUPP is advised to engage in patriotic actions rather than sowing discord at a time like this.”
The CUPP in a statement issued by its spokesman, Ikenga Ugochinyere alleged that credible intelligence revealed that
some INEC officers were releasing uncollected PVC to the desperate politicians in Osun to use imported voters to vote at the rerun.
Ugochinyere also alleged that a senior INEC staff had refused to release the official list of people who have collected PVC’s at the seven polling units where rerun election would be held.
“We have it on good authority that less than 1000 registered voters have collected PVC’s out of the 3,498.
“This means that less than 1000 persons are to participate in the actual voting. We demand that INEC immediately release this list.”
He added that the plot was part of a move to use incidence form to vote knowing that the finger prints of those with the hijacked uncollected PVC can’t be read by the Smart Card Reader.(NAN)
•Wike lashes aspirants opposing Port Harcourt
Barely two weeks to the national convention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), key stakeholders are yet to agree on the choice of a venue.
A meeting yesterday between the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) and the Board of Trustees (BoT) to agree on a venue ended in a deadlock.
A sharp disagreement ensued when the Deputy National Chairman, Elder Yemi Akinwonmi, said the party had agreed on the choice of Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital as venue.
Briefing the meeting, Akinwonmi said: “On the issue of venue, the party set up a committee headed by Ambassador Ibrahim Kazaure and they went round the Southsouth and the Southeast zones before coming out with the choice of Port Harcourt.
“As in acceptance, the NWC had consulted widely with the PDP Governors Forum. We have consulted widely with the BOT. We have consulted widely with the various caucuses of the party.
“And today it has been jointly accepted that we will converge in Port Harcourt, in no distance time for the national convention.
The international community has told us that they want to watch keenly the Port Harcourt convention.
“Particularly, they said they want to come and watch the process that will lead to the emergence of our flag bearer, because by the grace of God, our flag bearer will be the next president.”
But, the BoT chairman, Senator Walid Jibrin, countered him, saying the party had not agreed to hold the convention in Port Harcourt.
Jibrin said: “Even though the Deputy National Chairman said the issue of venue has been concluded, I want to say that the issue of venue is still on and is not concluded.
“Because there are many suggetions on the issue of venue. We look at all suggestions and let me assure you that the issue of venue will be resolved.
“But, for now, we are working round the clock to ensure that we have a very suitable venue accepted by everybody. I want to say that everyone of us should come together and ensure that we have a venue suitable to all of us”.
A source at the parley confided in our correspondent after the meeting that the leadership of the party has ruled out Abuja as venue for the convention, citing “strategic reasons”.
The source further said that the choice of Enugu was rejected by Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi for unspecified reasons. Akwa Ibom State Governor Udom Emmanuel also turned down a request to hold the convention in Uyo, the state capital.
It was further revealed that suggestions by some party leaders to hold the convention in Kano did not go down well with many of the 12 presidential aspirants.
Although the source did not state reasons for the rejection of Kano, it was apparent that the choice of the ancient city could be interpreted as working to give undue leverage to one of the presidential aspirants, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
Jibrin confided in our correspondent that the 12 presidential aspirants would be meeting with the BoT and the chairman of the PDP national convention committee, Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State last night.
According to him, the issue of venue would be finally decided at the meeting. He promised the venue would be agreeable to all the aspirants.
Also yesterday, the party inaugurated its National Convention Planning Committee. The 85-member committee is headed by Okowa, with his Taraba State counterpart Darius Ishaku.
THERE was confusion yesterday among the supporters of three major parties participating in tomorrow’s Osun State governorship election, following the rumour that they had formed an alliance.
Radio stations were broadcasting the denial of such an alliance by no fewer than three of the five prominent candidates.
The candidates are Iyiola Omisore of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Moshood Adeoti of the African Democratic Party (ADP) and Fatai Akinbade of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
At a briefing in Osogbo, the state capital, Omisore, who spoke for the three candidates, said Adeoti and Akinbade did not step down for him, adding that what they had was an alliance for a credible election.
He accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of intimidating would-be voters at rallies.
The APC denied the allegation.
Its spokesman Kunle Oyatomi described the “gang-up” of opposition parties as a “house of commotion”.
Speaking on the telephone last night, Oyatomi said: “We in the APC do not see any threat to whatever the opposition or a coalition of them is doing.
“We are bigger than all of them put together. We will win the election because we have a lot to show as achievements.
“We defeated them in 2014 when the PDP in this state was formidable. Now they are split into pieces. They will lose. They are jittery and are pretenders.
“They are people who lack vision and mission. That is why they have reduced the campaign to only payment of salaries.”
Omisore said: “APC has been boasting that they will rig election. So, these three parties, in spite of the differences in their names and candidates, still believe that the election must be credible. That’s why we signed the protocol. It is incumbent on these other parties, being leading opposition parties in the state, to publicly ask the people of Osun State to be vigilant as they cast their votes to prevent malpractices. We just want sincerity, credibility and fairness at the poll.”
Omisore said each of the three parties would run its election by itself, but that there was need to encourage voters across the state not to be intimidated in any way because they are committed to free and fair election tomorrow.
But when asked to provide evidence of the alleged intimidation by the governing party, Omisore said the declarations made by the APC at its rallies were pure intimidation which could discourage the masses from coming out to cast their votes. “We watched it on Channels Television as they said those things. So, it is public knowledge, nothing that requires any documentary evidence,” he said.
The statement reads: “The attention of the Moshood Adeoti Campaign Organisation (MACO) has been drawn to a rumour currently gaining ground in Osun State that our principal and governorship candidate of the Action Democratic Party (ADP), Alhaji Moshood Adeoti, has withdrawn his participation from the race in favour of Senator Iyiola Omisore, the candidates of the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
“We wish to reiterate that at no time was our canadidate contacted for such and that the ADP and Alhaji Adeoti harbour no such plans.
“We still stand resolutely behind our resolve to contest and by God’s grace win the election.”
Akinbade debunked the insinuations that he had stepped down for Omisore.
His Media Officer said: “Akinbade is in the race for good. The people of Osun are itching to have him as their next governor. This they hope to translate come Saturday, September 22, through their worthy votes.”
According to Akinbade, the rumour is malicious and insulting to the ADC political family.
“Our main focus is the execution of the Sept. 22, 2018 election to success. The people of Osun State are rooting for the victory of Alhaji Fatai Akinbade and this will be proved by their massive votes on Saturday. You are requested to remain resolute and cast your votes for the ADC on Saturday.”
The statement condemned what it described as “dirty” and “cheap” politics embarked upon by those”afraid of their own political shadow.”
A presidential aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal has promised to restructure Nigeria if elected president in 2019.
He also pledged to evolve scientific measures that would enable the security architecture to meet up the challenges of the 21st century and also make the education of the youth a top priority of his government.
This, he said, would create independent spirit in the youth to pursue develop their potential and in turn become employers of labour.
A statement by his media office said the presidential aspirant unveiled his agenda during a meeting with PDP delegates from the Federal Capital Territory, FCT and the North Central in Abuja to the forthcoming national convention on Thursday.
He said restructuring of the country was paramount to recreate a sense of unity among the people.
Tambuwal said: “We are here to meet our delegates from the North Central and kick start our campaign properly. This aspiration is fired and motivated by the spirit of service and the spirit to take back our country and reunite our people. And to reposition our country for it to be properly restructured to the benefit of Nigerians.
“When you give us the flag and eventually elect me as the president of the country, I will rejig the security architecture of Nigeria, employ manpower that has the capacity to address the security challenges of today, using technology.
“A situation whereby we don’t employ and deploy technology for the security of Nigeria can no longer be tolerated.
“Repositioning Nigeria by way of ensuring that all of our children are in schools and get required training so that those that will be employed in blue collar jobs and the others that will go for various private businesses are properly trained. And that is why, when I was elected as governor of Sokoto state, I identified as key, number one priority the education of the citizens of Sokoto state. And we will apply the same formula in our project of making Nigeria great again and make sure every Nigeria child is properly educated.
“So that our children can realise their potentials and apply them to their benefit, the benefit of their community and the benefit of Nigeria state. The children of Nigeria have to be educated because it the only way we can avoid reoccurrence of Boko Haram. If you have them out there available to use by miscreants who are enemies of this country, it would be easy for to use to harness and misapply. But as a government, we must come up with deliberate policies to ensuring that no child of Nigeria is out of school and that none of them is without training that he or she can probably use to set up private businesses.
“The talk about restructuring Nigeria is also about that three arms: securing Nigeria, repositioning Nigeria which of course includes creating wealth and we can only create wealth when you have collaboration between government and the price sector. Government one cannot do it and the private sector alone also cannot do it. There has to be a synergy between the private sector and government for us to create wealth so that every citizens of Nigeria can have a better standard of living.
“I believe in restructuring Nigeria. The people of South South are asking for restructuring base on the understanding that oil wealth be properly applied in their respective places. Nothing is wrong with that! Let us judiciously apply the oil wealth and develop this country.
“And the people of South West are asking for restructuring in terms of physical restructuring of the economy, that is to making sure that every part the country realises its potential and ensure enabling environment for business to grow.
“While the people of the south east are interested in state creation. And while the in the north the issues are not far away from ensuring that we have better education, more development and all of that.
“And these are issues we would sit down and find a way to make them a reality. So under my administration, restructuring Nigeria will be given a serious attention and it will be a priority.
“I will not be that kind of president that will shoot out the ideas of Nigerians.”
The Acting Chairman of the PDP of FCT, Mr. Ibrahim Biko described Tambuwal as a good product that would market itself.
On behalf of the delegates, Biko pledged their votes for Tambuwal at the PDP convention.
He said: “The good product sells itself. This man is not too young to rule. Age is on his side and he is fit to move around and also to articulate on issue and proffer solutions.
“We in the FCT; we are one and as delegates, we speak in one voice. We don’t have divergent opinions. Our vote is a consolidated vote. We don’t divide our vote. So we are promising you our vote and we will not disappoint you.”
•Ex-Senate President cautions against ‘imposition of candidates’
Former Senate President David Mark and ex-Plateau State Governor David Jang and their supporters are kicking over alleged moves by Senate President Bukola Saraki to engineer the selection of a consensus presidential candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from the Northcentral zone.
All three are seeking the party’s ticket for the 2019 presidential election.
A report at the weekend, from Saraki’s camp, suggested that stakeholders from the zone had opted to pick a consensus aspirant from the zone to contest with similar aspirants from the Northwest and Northeast.
But loyalists of Mark and Jang are not amused by the report.
Mark’s camp, in particular, warned PDP against imposition of candidates.
The supporters said the consensus agenda was a plot to ambush their principals to forego their presidential aspirations for Saraki.
Mark’s loyalists, The Nation gathered, were uncomfortable that a private session organized by Saraki was turned into a consensus forum.
“What happened on Wednesday was not a meeting of Northcentral leaders per se. It was Saraki who conveyed the session to brief some leaders from our zone on his presidential aspiration. The former President of the Senate, Chief David Mark was not even there,” a source in Mark’s camp said.
“There was no communiqué agreeing on consensus. The leaders only advised the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of PDP, Sen. Walid Jibril to set up a committee to consult with the three aspirants from North-Central and come out with something.
“They asked the committee to liaise with the aspirants from the zone. No one is talking of a consensus candidate at all.
“The session was more of a personal agenda by Saraki because at the end of the day, a statement from the gathering was signed by the Director-General, Abubakar Bukola Saraki Campaign Organization, Wakil Mohammed.
“With such a sensitive decision on consensus, should the statement come from Saraki’s Campaign DG or stakeholders in Northcentral? Shouldn’t there be a communiqué?
“Why must only a party be the one to sign and issue a statement? We are suspicious of the session; it was a ploy to outsmart other aspirants in the zone.”
Responding to a question, the source said: “The former President of the Senate has not been consulted on consensus option; he is going ahead with his aspiration and plans for primaries.”
A reliable source in Jang’s camp said: “The meeting was called by the Northcentral zone of the PDP at the request of Saraki. It was chaired by the Zonal Chairman, Theophillus Dakas Shan, himself.
“Saraki wanted to brief the zone about his ambition. It was not a Middle Belt meeting but Northcentral and consensus was not up for discussion.
“Actually, it was ex-Governor Babangida Aliyu who urged the meeting to set up a small committee to encourage the three aspirants from the Northcentral to discuss among themselves.
“Going by our plans, Jang will on Monday submit his presidential nomination form.”
When contacted, the Zonal Chairman, Shan said: “We didn’t reach any agreement on consensus.
“We resolved to allow our elders in PDP in Northcentral to talk to all the aspirants. If there is a possibility, we will bring one candidate and if it is impossible, they will go for the primaries. Whatever we are going to do, the three aspirants must reach an agreement.”
Asked if the PDP in the zone had raised a committee on consensus by the three aspirants, Shan said: “We are not going to set up any committee; our elders will talk to the aspirants.”
He admitted that Saraki came around to brief Northcentral PDP on his presidential aspiration.
He added: “We are expecting Mark and Jang to come and brief us on their presidential aspiration too.”
A former governor in one of the Northcentral states said: “I think the DG of Saraki Campaign Organization misrepresented the meeting. There was a suggestion by the President of the Senate for the adoption a consensus candidate by PDP Northcentral which does not amount to automatic recommendation.”
In an address at the session on Wednesday, Saraki said: “Leaders from the North Central need to work together to ensure that a PDP candidate emerges from the zone.
“It is clear that the only way to achieve unity in the country is when you have a leader who can manage the differences and galvanize our energy towards achieving development.
“It is not about where you come from, but it is about what you can do for our country. If there is anybody who can do better than those of us in the North Central Zone, let them stand up.
“It is important that in October, our delegates from the Northcentral should work to ensure that a Northcentral candidate emerges – and they should work together with delegates from across the country to ensure that a Northcentral candidate emerges. We request your support.”
Mark cautions PDP against imposition of candidates
In a statement in Abuja, Senator Mark cautioned PDP leaders against imposition of candidates.
He urged all members of the party to conduct themselves peacefully with a view to ensuring respect for law and order.
“As we converge to elect delegates to the Congresses beginning from Saturday, we must be guided by democratic tenets and observe the principle of fairness and justice,” Mark said in the statement signed by his media aide, Mr. Paul Mumeh.
He added: “We must demonstrate to fellow country men and women that we are truly democratic.
“I am sure that our members nationwide will showcase our reformed and rebranded party as the preferred choice for the people.”
Senator Mark said he joined the presidential race because “I believe I can make a positive difference in Nigeria.”
Continuing, he said: “nobody can shy away from the fact that Nigeria is currently faced with intractable security, economic and socio-political challenges that unarguably threatens the corporality of the country.
“Rarely has our country been faced with such a state of uncertainty, despair, suspicion and division.
“The time has come for all men and women who care and have the requisite experiences and courage to stand up, retrieve it from the brink and lead our nation into prosperity.”
Senator Mark expressed optimism that his roadmap to economic recovery and prosperity tagged ‘730 model’ will turn around the economy of the nation within two years of his administration if he is elected President.
He said he has assembled a team of young professionals who can hit the ground running and facilitate the economic recovery.
He also pledged to give education top priority as the bedrock for development.
His words:”We will focus on education and create a pool of highly trained citizens with excellent IT skills who will be employable as well as create jobs.”
“We will support Small and Medium Scale Enterprises (SMEs) as a matter of priority with interest free cooperative loans and appropriate technology, which will be the main driver of the economy with attendant rate of huge employment opportunities.”
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has not defected from the Peoples Democratic Party, his campaign office said today.
An online report has it that Abubakar was planning to move out of the PDP in a matter of weeks or days to the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), where he is sure to pick the party’s presidential ticket.
The campaign office described the report as a malicious attempt to confuse the public about the aspiration of Abubakar, ahead of the forthcoming presidential primaries election of the PDP.
“For the avoidance of any doubt, Atiku remains the frontline aspirant for the presidential ticket of the PDP.
“In the past two months, Abubakar has moved across states in the country consulting with stakeholders of the PDP and explaining to them his agenda encapsulated in the acronym JOBS: Jobs, Opportunity, Being united and Security) for Nigeria.
“The nationwide consultations continues this week with visits to the South West, North West and North Central zones of the country.”
It added that Abubakar’s passion and commitment to winning the PDP primaries is without any compromise.
“To assume that he will abandon the hard work he has done with the positive results he is getting from the stakeholders of the party is to say the least preposterous and unthinkable.
The campaign office called on supporters of Atiku to remain steadfast and see the contrived news of defection as an attempt to distract it from the set task of winning the PDP ticket and the 2019 presidential election by the grace of God.”

Senate President Bukola Saraki has expressed optimism the impeachment threats against him will fail.
He said he is not losing sleep over the threats, saying he would retain his seat as long as rule of law is followed.
He also described insinuations that he defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) because of his presidential ambition as “cheap blackmail”.
Saraki, who was on a private visit to Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa yesterday in Asaba -the Delta State Capital, said he left from the All Progressives Congress (APC) because the ruling party had derailed from the “democratic visions and ideas” espoused on its formation.
Saraki, who had on his entourage Senators Peter Nwaboshi and Dino Melaye among others, said he is not losing any sleep over the impeachment threats.
According to him, when the National Assembly reconvenes and constitutional processes are followed, the impeachment threats will “fizzle out”.
His words: “You can look at me. I am not losing any sleep about it. We believe democracy must go by the rule of law.
“There are processes, constitutional processes over what we do. So I am not concerned about that. There are lots of noise being made about that but be sure that once we resume the processes are followed we will see that the noise will fizzle out so I am not concerned about it.”
He said his mission to Delta State was to share views with a colleague with whom he had a very cordial relationship at the National Assembly, describing Okowa as a very “important, capable and competent party man”.
Saraki lauded the level of development witnessed in Delta State in the past three years, saying, “A lot of opportunities have been created for Deltans. There is a lot of development in the state and this is what we want to see in most of our states.”
The Senator representing Bayelsa East in the National Assembly, Ben Murray-Bruce, has welcomed the Senate president Bukola Saraki back to the Peoples Democratic Party.
Saraki on Tuesday evening, announced his exit from the All Progressives party in a Tweet on his Twitter handle @bukolasaraki.
Saraki said: “I wish to inform Nigerians that, after extensive consultations, I have decided to take my leave of the All Progressives Congress (APC).”
Although, Saraki did not indicate the party he is moving to, Ben Bruce however welcomed him home to PDP.
Ben bruce wrote: ” Today, I am excited to welcome home to the @OfficialPDPNig, the very sagacious and excellent leader and president of the @NGRSenate, Distinguished Sen. @bukolasaraki. The @APCNigeria failed at putting you down, and inadvertently succeeded in making you stronger. Welcome home”
Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki has finally announced his exit from the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Saraki announced his decision in a Tweet on his Twitter handle @bukolasaraki on Tuesday evening.
The tweet read: “I wish to inform Nigerians that, after extensive consultations, I have decided to take my leave of the All Progressives Congress (APC).”
He did not indicate the party he is moving to, though there have been speculations of his plan to defect back to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Ten Senators last week defected from the APC to the PDP, while two others joined African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Saraki’s final exit might have been hasten by the dissolution of the Kwars State executive of the APC at all levels on Monday by the National Working Committee of the party (NWC).
The NWC asked a caretaker committee led by Hon. Bashir Bolarinwa to run the party pending the election of new leaders.
Caretaker committees will be appointed at the ward and local government levels.
The dissolved state executive committee, which is loyal to Senate President Bukola Saraki, is led by Alhaji Ishola Balogun-Fulani, who has been openly castigating the party along with other leaders in the state.
It was learnt that the decision was taken because of alleged disloyalty by the Balogun-Fulani led APC executive.
It was also gathered that the step became necessary to prevent Saraki from “hijacking” the party’s candidates who will be elected at the primaries of APC.
