When Boko Haram returned the Dapchi school girls that they abducted one month ago, they left a strong warning to the residents not to send their children back to school again. As if that was not enough, the bigger threat issued was re-emphasized from the testimonies of some of the freed girls that the insurgents told them that should they go back to western education again, they will risk their freedom should they get abducted again.
Many have sat to ponder on the threat as some of the girls even before the threat of the insurgents became skeptical of going back to school having witnessed the black Monday of 19th February when the insurgents stormed their school and carted away with over 100 of their classmates.
With the comments of most of the parents, it is as good as the advice of the insurgents have fallen on deaf ears as the threats did not in any way deterred the resilience of the parents to continue to educate their children and ensure they accomplish their dreams.
Musa Kalla, the father of Zara Musa who was also abducted and brought back safely told our correspondent that, “no one can stop me to educate my daughter. It is not possible for me to obey Boko Haram for that kind of advice. God is the creator and the maker of everything that happens in this world. My daughter Isha Allah will continue with her school and become what God has destined her to be,” Musa said.
He told our correspondent that from the kind of confidence and the weapons he saw the Boko Haram insurgent carried in their vehicles, he is convinced that nobody can stop them to go anywhere they want to go, adding that, “in fact they can even enter Damaturu and abduct girls in any school they want to”.
On whether he is contemplating of hiding to the advice of Boko Haram to keep his daughter at home, Kachalla said, “We cannot send them to that particular school. It’s not safe for us to keep them at home either. There is no security in that school. i can send her to either school in Nguru or Maiduguri or any other state apart from Yobe because, I have confidence that those guys can come to Damaturu and abduct girls if they want to. I feel that Nguru is safer because there is a barrack there and it has only one road and plenty river unlike Damaturu and Potiskum that are so porous. There are many roads in Damaturu that Boko Haram will follow and you will not catch them”.
Asked if Government secure the school in Dapchi and makes it safe for the students to return, Kachalla answered, “were they not asked to leave when Boko Haram came?, how will I trust this knid of people again. The same way they left is the same way they will still leave when Boko Haram will come again”.
The story of Adamu Jumbam has no excitement. While the people were rejoicing for the safe return of their daughters, his head was down in grief with many unanswered questions on his mind when this reporter visited his house.
The women were so distraught to speak with the press summoned courage amidst his grief to narrates how sad he felt when it was confirmed that his daughter died during the abduction.
Having submitted to the will of God for the death of his daughter Jumbam asked a fundamental question as to the operations of the insurgents in the entire events that played out.
“The surprising thing is that Boko Haram abducted these girls and still returned then in the heart of the town in broad day light and went back freely is absolutely amazing. This troubles our imagination. How will Boko Haram abducted these teenagers over one month, returned them and nothing was done to them?,” he asked.
Jumbam also added, “We might be regarded as villagers but it’s surprising to us and I wish to say without mincing words that we have been cheated. If government is serious we need to see her seriousness with this abduction saga. But if they feel we are not Nigerians then let it be,” he concluded as he tried to fight back tears from his eyes.
Fatima Abdullahi, the mother of Fatima Abdullahi said she did not go school herself but she can never compromise the education of her daughter.
“Myself didn’t go to school but I know that education is very important for now. It is not possible for somebody to stop the education of my daughter except God says so. What Boko Haram is saying is not possible for us to follow. Our children will continue to go to school. Islam does not forbid knowledge”, Fatima said.
Like Kachalla, Fatima said her daughter will no longer school in Dapchi but she won’t be against any change of school for her.
“We cannot say now because our children are not in our custody but in the custody of the government, but like I said my daughter will go to school even if government decide to return her back to me but not this school in Dapchi because we cannot have any rest of mind if our children are in that school,”.
The growing fear of a possible reopening of Government Girls Science Technical College has continue to burden the minds of the residents and parents especially recasting the mental picture of what they saw on Monday February 19th 2018.
Faiza Mohammed, one of the girls who escaped Boko Haram onslaught at the school on that ill-fated day had told this reporter that she will not go back to the school except the Chief of Army Staff Lt. Gen. Yusuf Tukur Buratai is the gateman of the school.
Faiza statement underscored the need for authorities to beef up security in the school so as to build confidence both among the students and parents who are at the moment apprehensive of the renewed attacks on schools.
In an attempt to ensure the students don’t miss their examinations especially the Senior Secondary III, the school management has relocated all them to Government Girls College Nguru to prepare for their certificate examination.
A short statement signed by the school management of GGSTC Dapchi reads: “This is to inform the general public that GGSTC Dapchi SS3 students are hereby called to resume back to GG Nguru, on Monday 25/03/2018 in preparation for WAEC Examinations commencing 3/4/2018”.
States have shared N1.9trillion Paris Club Refund and Budget Support Facilities to enable them meet their obligations to workers, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo said yesterday.
According to him, at the inception of the Buhari administration in 2015, 26 of the 36 states were not up to date in their wage obligation to workers.
“ The Budget Support Facility to states has gone a long way in cushioning the shock experienced by the federating units which resulted from the sharp drop in prices of crude oil in 2016.
“So our support to states has remained unprecedented in the history of administration in Nigeria,” he said.
The theme of the programme, which is ”Consolidating Gains and Accelerating Growth.’’
Osinbajo said that the Muhammadu Buhari -led administration had continued to extend equal and unbiased support to states, regardless of party affiliations.
“ We have been sensitive, attentive and responsive to their needs while our programmes and policies have been developed with the states in mind.
“ The Anchor Borrowers Programme has continued to provide cheap credit to small holders farmers across the nation.
“The President’s Fertiliser Initiative has ensured that farmers across Nigeria have direct access to fertiliser.
He explained that the administration had been able to reverse the trend of corruption that existed in the country when it assumed power in 2015.
He added that the government also reversed the underfunding of infrastructure with N1.3 trillion allocated to capital projects in 2017 – the highest in the country’s history.
“ We have continued to block leakages and increased funding of core sectors, like agriculture and transportation by as much as 400 per cent.
“External reserves are in highest level in five years while inflation rate has dropped for 13 consecutive months.
“We have done all these and more in spite of the fact that we now earn 60 per cent less than Nigeria earned in 2014 and thereby show that we can achieve more with less revenue, with prudence and sincerity of purpose,” he said.
The Vice President suggested a sub-regional economic summit among Ogun, Lagos and Benin Republic towards leveraging on the economy of proximity of both Lagos and Benin Republic to the state.
He added: ”We have launched and implemented a comprehensive economic recovery and growth plan. We pursued peace in the Niger Delta, we focused on improving our business environment, we scaled up our investment in agriculture and infrastructure and aggressively worked at expanding Nigeria revenue base.
”Perhaps most importantly, we have reversed the grand corruption in public finance and impunity which attended the conduct of public business especially in the past five years.
”The main reason for Nigeria’s growth is not just a matter of our relying heavily on a single commodity; it is the fact that proceeds of that single commodity were regularly hijacked consistently by a few.
”In the so-called strategic contract with NPDC, the promoters of those companies made away with about $3billion, almost a tenth of our reserves at a point.
”At the moment, we are in the course of getting the $3 billion to build roads; the Abuja-Kaduna-Kano road, the second Niger bridge, the Enugu-Port Hacourt road, the East West road, the Sagamu-Benin-Ore road, the Kano Maiduguri road, the Abuja-Lafia road, the Akwanga-Keffi road plus the Lagos-Abeokuta road.
”It is important for us to understand that our country’s problems must be analyzed on the perspective of what our real issues are. We can’t talk about the Nigeria economy without the plight that was caused years ago by people simply stealing the resources of this country.
”In one single transaction, the sum of N100 billion and $289 million in cash were released three weeks to the 2015 elections. That money was essentially embezzled.
”When you consider that in 2014 when the price of oil was at an average of $110 a barrel, only N99 billion was spent on power, works and housing; agriculture and transportation got 14 and 15 billion Naira respectively.
”So, the total spent on capital in 2014 on those areas have mentioned was just N153 and over N150 billion was released and shared in three days, this is the enormity of what we are talking about.
“There’s no country in the world that can survive on grand corruption and that is what we are talking about and that is why it is important for the Federal Government under President Muhammad Buhari to reverse that grand corruption,” he said.
Ministers of Finance Kemi Adeosun and Agricultural and Rural Development Audu Ogbeh said Nigeria had the capacity to grow its GDP at 7 per cent by being focused.
Ogbeh, who rued the 9% interest rate being charged farmers by the Central Bank of Nigeria as being prohibitive, said 5-7% would be more reasonable.
Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun said his administration was poised to bequeathing a lasting legacy and provide a model of development that is impactful and sustainable for the state.
Amosun highlighted his achievements in agriculture, infrastructure, security and investment.
Former Mexican President Felipe Calderon expressed confidence that with rule of law and accountability, Nigeria would navigate out of her economic doldrums.
Calderon, who delivered the keynote address at the Forum, said knowledge from research had shown that the economy of nations without rule of law and accountability would only remain stagnant at 0% or be crawling only at 1%.
The ex- president explained that the economy of a country could grow for as much as 34% with rule of law and accountability, regardless of its geographical location, culture, leadership ability or even the natural resources.
He cited Singapore as a nation with no much national resources but remained one of the best economies in the world because of rule of law and accountability.
”It is important to have a country that is rules by law and not by man,” Calderon said.

Muhammadu Sanusi II, and supported by the
Chief Imam of Kano, Prof. Sani Zaharaddeen.
Buhari, in his capacity as the bride’s father,

Gen. Aliyu Gusau (rtd), members of the business
community, politicians and members of the

Few days after the sack of U.S. Secretary of
State Rex Tillerson by President Donald Trump,
FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe has been
suspended for lying to investigators reviewing the
bureau’s probe of Hillary Clinton’s email server.
The sack made possible by the Justice
Department, dealt a big blow to McCabe, as his
firing came just days before his retirement and a
guarantee of lifetime pension.
“Pursuant to Department Order 1202, and based
on the report of the Inspector General, the
findings of the FBI Office of Professional
Responsibility, and the recommendation of the
Department’s senior career official, I have
terminated the employment of Andrew McCabe
effective immediately,” Attorney General Jeff
Sessions said in a statement.
“After an extensive and fair investigation and
according to Department of Justice procedure, the
Department’s Office of the Inspector General (OIG)
provided its report on allegations of misconduct
by Andrew McCabe to the FBI’s Office of
Professional Responsibility (OPR),” Sessions said.
“The FBI’s OPR then reviewed the report and
underlying documents and issued a disciplinary
proposal recommending the dismissal of Mr.
McCabe. Both the OIG and FBI OPR reports
concluded that Mr. McCabe had made an
unauthorized disclosure to the news media and
lacked candor − including under oath − on
multiple occasions. Read also
The FBI expects every employee to adhere to the
highest standards of honesty, integrity, and
accountability. As the OPR proposal stated, ‘all
FBI employees know that lacking candor under
oath results in dismissal and that our integrity is
our brand.’”
McCabe hit back in a fiery response of his own.
“This attack on my credibility is one part of a
larger effort not just to slander me personally, but
to taint the FBI, law enforcement, and intelligence
professionals more generally,” McCabe said.
“It is part of this Administration’s ongoing war on
the FBI and the efforts of the Special Counsel
investigation, which continue to this day. Their
persistence in this campaign only highlights the
importance of the Special Counsel’s work.”
McCabe’s firing marked stunning fall for a man
who was No. 2 at the bureau for a time under
Comey, ran it and even was reportedly on
President Trump’s short list for the directorship.
The Supreme Court on Thursday adjourned indefinitely, hearing in the appeal filed by Senate President, Bukola Saraki, challenging the continuation of his trial on alleged false assets declaration.
Justice Mohammed Dattijo adjourned the matter on the grounds that all processes had not been filed and served.
Dattijo said the registrar of the court would transmit hearing date to parties as soon as the processes were filed and exchanged.
Saraki is challenging the decision of the Court of Appeal, Abuja, which in December 2017 nullified 15 out of 18 count-charge filed against him at Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT).
The panel, led by Justice Tinuade Akomolafe-Wilson, ordered Saraki to answer count 4, 5 and 6 of the charges.
The outstanding three charges bordered on alleged false declaration of property on 17A/17B, McDonald St., Ikoyi, Lagos and incoherent asset declaration after Saraki’s tenure as governor of Kwara.
The senate president is asking the apex court to set aside the decision of the lower court and uphold that of the CCT which acquitted him.
However, in a cross appeal the respondent asked the court to discountenance the appellant’s prayer and allow him to stand justice
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) yesterday arraigned two former workers of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for alleged misappropriation of N731 million.
Christian Nwosu and Tijani Nda Bashir were arraigned at a Kwara State High Court.
The commission sued the defendants on a seven-count charge bordering on criminal breach of trust and theft.
EFCC counsel Rotimi Oyedepo said the offences were committed between 2013 and 2015 while the accused were in the employ of INEC in Kwara State.
Oyedepo added that “the synopsis of all that we have said is to show the court the grounds of preferring criminal charges, criminal breach of trust and theft against the defendants.”
The EFCC counsel urged the court to grant his application in the interest of justice.
When the charges were read to the accused persons, they pleaded not guilty.
Having pleaded not guilty to the offences, Oyedepo urged the court to give the case accelerated hearing, pursuant to Section 19 sub-section 2b of EFCC Act.
He added that “In view of the defendants’ pleas, they have deemed to have put themselves for trial.”
But counsel to both defendants, Obinna Okereke and Nelson Imo, opposed the application seeking to remand the defendants in prison custody.
They sought the constitutional power of the court to grant the clients bail, arguing that the offences committed were bailable.
Okereke and Imo opted for oral application, praying the court “to admit them to bail on liberal terms of sefl-recognisance.
Okereke averred that the “court is conferred with constitutional and statutory powers to judicially and judiciously exercise its discretion.”
After listening to the parties’ arguments and counter-arguments, the presiding Judge, Sikiru Oyinloye, in his ruling said: “It is my considered position that bail can be granted even though a prima-facie has been established against the defendants. I thereby admit them to bail of N50 million each in like sum.”
Justice Oyinloye added that the defendants must produce two sureties each and that each of the sureties must have landed property within the jurisdiction.
He said the defendants should also provide their photographs with that of their sureties, ordering the defendants to deposit their international passports with the chief registrar of the Kwara State High Court.
Justice Oyinloye added that the bail could be revoked if any of the accused persons failed to appear in court during trial.
However, pending the perfection of the bail conditions, Justice Oyinloye ordered that the defendants be remanded in Mandala prison.
He adjourned the case till April 26 and 27 for commencement of trial.
Barcelona thumped Chelsea 3-0 at Camp Nou on Wednesday in the second leg of the UEFA Champions League Round of 16, to move into the quarter-finals.
Bayern Munich also qualified for the quarter-finals on Wednesday, after beating Besiktas 3-1, to amass an aggregate 8-1.
The Catalans who held Chelsea 1-1 in London two weeks ago, won 4-1 aggregate, with Lionel Messi scoring the first goal in the third minute.
In the 20th minute he opened the defence for Ousmane Dembele to score the second goal. In the 63rd minute, Messi had his second goal of the day.
They will now wait till Friday to know their quarter-final opponents, after the draw by UEFA in Lyon, Switzerland.
Messi becomes only the second player to reach the milestone in Europe’s premier tournament, following Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo, who has 117 goals in 152 games.
By the end, the Argentinian’s scintillating breakaway in the build-up to Dembele’s first Barcelona goal had become little more than a footnote to what was another Messi masterclass.
The match capped a remarkable five days for the 30-year-old, who sat out Saturday’s La Liga win over Malaga to attend to the birth of his third child.
At the finish, Chelsea coach Antonio Conte left the field with his arm around the forward, perhaps with nothing to add but congratulations.
With Manchester United dumped out by Sevilla and Tottenham outmanouevred by Juventus, Chelsea’s exit means for all the talk of a Premier League resurgence, Liverpool and Manchester City are its only two representatives in the quarter-finals.
Spain have three, after Real saw off the challenge of Paris Saint-Germain.
A UN rights watchdog on Monday called on Saudi Arabia to end discriminatory practices against women, including its pervasive system of male guardianship and give them full access to justice.
After reviewing the deeply conservative kingdom’s record, the independent experts welcomed recent decisions to allow women to launch their own businesses and to lift a de facto ban on them driving a car, set for June.
Saudi Arabia is still one of the most restrictive countries for women in the world.
It has no women ministers and retains a guardianship system requiring women to have a male relative’s approval for important decisions.
It should enforce a recent order that would entitle all women to obtain a passport, travel or study abroad, choose their residency, and access health care “without having to seek their guardian’s consent’’.
“We asked for the abolition of the system, because even though they said they had passed a law, we realised that in practice the system still continued,’’ Hilary Gbedemah, a panel member, said.
A Saudi delegation told the panel in February that it had implemented rules and laws tailored to traditions and religious values that allowed women more independence as they played a growing economic role.
Laws concerning justice and child protection had been strengthened.
But the experts said that Saudi Arabia should implement a comprehensive strategy to “eliminate patriarchal attitudes and stereotypes that discriminate against women’’.
Rape and all forms of violence against women should be made crimes under Saudi law, they said.
Women should have the right to choose their dress and not face violence or threats by the religious police and their male guardian.
Discussion of the guardianship issue had been “very wide’’ with the delegation, Gbedemah said.
“We saw it where women were deemed to be disobedient to their guardians, where they needed their consent to marry, where the guardians could enforce dress codes, and in the area of domestic violence,” she said.
“So, in a nutshell, these are the four important areas that we asked for follow-up on, within two years,” she said.
Gbedemeh, asked about the planned lifting of the ban on driving, said: “Even if it is symbolic, it is a positive step.
“Because for so long it was taken for granted that women could not and would not drive.
“I am positive that once this is done, it will open the gates for leverage for removal of other restrictions,” she said. (Reuters/NAN)
Russia’s foreign ministry said on Monday that British threats to boycott the 2018 FIFA World Cup would damage ties with Moscow and hurt world sport, Interfax news agency reported.
The British government it would respond decisively to any Russian government’s involvement, in the wake of the poisoning of a former Russian double agent in England.
Prime Minister Theresa May said earlier on Monday it was “highly likely” that Moscow was responsible for the attack.
Some British officials have suggested boycotting the Russia-hosted World Cup later this year in response.
SIX persons, including a woman, a Danfo driver
and his conductor, were killed in two road crashes
in Lagos at the weekend.
Five of them were killed yesterday when a driver
believed to be drunk rammed into an 18-seater
commercial bus marked KRE 302 XA at the first
Lekki Toll Gate. Fourteen were injured.
The sixth victim was killed at Apongbon, Lagos
Island, when he alighted from his car to help an
accident victim.
It was gathered that the driver, who was in a
Lexus GX470 Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) marked
KJA615DF, belonging to Triple D Global Resources
Limited, was returning from a night club. He was
said to be driving against traffic.
According to witnesses, the Lexus and the bus
tumbled, killing two persons on the spot.
Sixteen, including the bus conductor, sustained
serious injuries. Three of them, including the
conductor died in the hospital, where they were
rushed to.
The Lexus driver is said to be unconscious.
The legs of the bus driver whose name was given
as Sarafa aka Baba Ikimo were shattered and
parts of his flesh still littered the scene hours
after the accident.
There were bloodstains at toll gate lane where
the accident occurred. The lane has since been
cordoned off. But an official at the toll gate said
it would be reopened tomorrow (today).
A witnesses said the Lexus driver hit some
vehicles, including a police van, at the Nigerian
Law School bus stop, and was speeding away to
escape.
Some hard drugs, a pair of scissors and empty
bottles of alcoholic driks were said to have been
found during a search of his vehicle.
A bus conductor at CMS bus stop, who refused
to be named, said the late bus driver, who was
fondly called Iso, was married and had kids. His
body has been taken to his village in Oyo State
for burial.
The conductor said the bus was coming from
Lakowe in Eti-Osa East Local Council
Development Area of the state to CMS.
“If the road was not free or if it was much later in
the day that the accident happened, the damage
would not have been this much. I learnt a lot of
people died and others that did not die sustained
serious injuries. Some broke their hands, legs and
other body parts. I wonder what came over the
jeep driver to moved against traffic,” he said.
An official at the toll gate, who also refused to be
named, said the driver was obviously drunk.
“I was not here when the accident happened but
from the information I got from my colleagues,
the driver of the jeep was drunk. They saw empty
bottles of alcoholic drinks inside his car. The road
is big enough for all cars to move freely and
conveniently, it is only a drunk man that would
have left his lane to another lane as wide as this
road is,” he said.
Another bus conductor who simply identified
himself as Baba Shola, described the accident as
unfortunate.
The Apongbon happened on Saturday night when
the motorist went to the aid of another motorist,
who collided with a trailer.
The injured motorist was said to have been
trapped in his Honda vehicle marked APP304DV
and the other motorist parked his BMWX5
(KSF339BK) to assist him.
A commercial bus marked BDG68XH also stopped
to help the victim.
While helping the driver off his car, an oncoming
vehicle ran them over and sped away.
The BMW X5 driver died on the spot; the trapped
victim and the bus driver were injured.
Among first responders at the scene of the Lekki
accident were the Lagos State Emergency
Management Agency (LASEMA) Response Unit,
Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS),
Rapid Response Squad (RRS), the police, State
Environmental Monitoring Unit (SEHMU) and
Lekki Concession Company (LCC) officials. They
